With Tyrone out of earshot, Molly whispered to Kevin: 'I dreamt about you last night. I dreamt that we were a normal couple doing normal things, walking down the street holding hands, eating our tea together, and no-one seemed to mind. Not even Sally and Tyrone.' He looked thoughtful as she sighed: 'I'd give anything for it to be like that.' then, as Tyrone came back through, clammed up and told them she'd see them later.

As he examined the morning post, Norris frowned in puzzlement: 'There's a letter here addressed to both of us.' As he opened it and murmured quietly, Emily asked impatiently: 'You're just going to read it in silence are you while I stand here like a lemon?'

She took it from him and read in astonishment: 'Dear Norris and Emily, as you know I am currently approaching the end of my sentence at Highfield Prison. In the opinion of the governor and my probation officer I have been an exemplary prisoner.'

Next door, Ken read: 'I am profoundly sorry for what I did and have no intention of offending again. Blanche looked at him blankly and asked: 'Who is it?'

In the cafe Hayley read: 'I have recently married Fiz and we would very much like to begin our married life together as residents of Coronation Street.'

In the shop, Dev read with a definite sneer in his voice: 'I understand that this may not be easy for some of you. I ask not for forgiveness but for understanding.' then opined: 'What a pompous nutcase.' Molly told him he wasn't a nutcase. Dev cried: 'Kidnapping a young girl?' but she replied: 'Ah, but it was Rosie Webster.' Each letter concluded by saying that he would value any responses that might help he and Fiz come to a decision about their future and contained a stamped addressed envelope for their response. Back at No 3, Emily finished: 'Yours sincerely, John Stape.' Norris mused pointedly: 'I wonder what Sally and Kevin have to say about this.'

The fact that Sally wasn't being scraped off the garage ceiling, and that morning's post clutched in her hand, seemed to indicate that she had either not seen or received a letter from John as she wibbled on at Kevin about how she would soon have to start the Christmas shopping and reminded him that it was their wedding anniversary on Friday.

And over the road, Fiz seemed intent on a duvet day as she snuggled down on the sofa. She barely looked up at the sound of that morning's post dropping onto the doormat. (Too busy wondering what sort of geographically challenged postman would deliver at No 1, No 3 then the corner shop and double back to finally deliver at No5 no doubt.)

The Peacock's had also received a letter and Claire opined that she was against and mused that he didn't know how Fiz could forgive him. Ash told her: 'I'd forgive you anything because you are a beautiful, incredible woman.' She put her arms round him and smiled: 'And you are a beautiful, incredible man.' but the pulled away adding: 'And we are not having sex till you've had a vasectomy.' He wailed: 'It's been weeks. It's driving me mad. We could take precautions.' but she retorted: 'I am doing. It's a simple procedure. You'd be in and out of hospital in no time.' He told her her he would beg but she replied: 'That's not very sexy. Go and have a cold shower.'

It seemed that everyone had received a letter and, as Dev opined that he didn't want him round there, Eddie agreed: 'They should chop his bits off.' Roy pointed out he made cakes for their wedding but he replied: 'Doesn't mean I want him living round here.' Roy opined: 'He should be allowed to take his place in our community. It's the mark of a civilised society.' but Dev retorted: 'Being able to get into a taxi with fear, Roy, is a mark of a civilised society.' Roy held up his hands in disappointment and looked at Ken with a sigh.

Sally overheard Sean and Janice discussing John and asked where the blushing bride was. Janice replied: 'Phoned in sick, probably in case you came in. Hey, what about that letter?' Sally looked puzzled and was stunned as they told her about everyone receiving one from John. She huffed that she hadn't received anything and Janice mused: 'Maybe he thought it would be a bit insensitive to send one to you.' Sally asked what it had said and Janice did the equivalent of lighting a blue touch paper as she took out her letter and handed it to her.

Leanne told Peter she had to go in to work: 'The assistant moron phoned and wants me to go in because the area moron is coming in. The tills been down for three days and assistant moron wants me to sort it out before area moron gets there. I'll be a couple of hours max.' He replied: 'Well make sure you are. Don't forget, it's Simon's recorder recital today.' and she smiled: 'Yea I know and I wouldn't miss it for the world. I'll see you later.'

Sally read the letter and fumed: 'Where's Rosie's letter?: Where's mine? We're the victims.' Janice smirked: 'Maybe he sent yours second class.' Sean pointed out he was only asking what people thought about his and Fiz's predicament. Sally growled that he would not be getting a courteous reply from her but Janice opined: 'Well I think it's a very nice letter. very sincere. And personally I don't have a problem with him moving back round here. Seemed like a very nice lad.'

Sally exploded: 'A nice lad? A nice lad?' and stormed off in high dudgeon. The pair watched her go and Sean snickered: 'Oh dear. Sally's on the warpath... again!' and they both burst out laughing.

Kevin sneaked into the shop and told Molly he'd been thinking about what she'd said: 'How would you like a day like a proper couple tomorrow? There's a 10k run in Glasgow. If we both sign up for it we'd have go tonight. We wouldn't be back till tomorrow night.' Their conversation was interrupted by the appropriate sound of a foghorn from Umed's doorbell as Sally walked in and screeched: 'Have you heard what he's done now?'

She ranted: 'He's only written to everybody asking if him and Fiz can live on the street. Well not everybody. Not us, the victims. We don't get a look in and why? Because he knows what we'll say if he does.'

Kev asked Ty if he'd had a letter from Stape and he shrugged: 'Dunno. I left before the post came. You've had something though. A letter addressed to The Webster Family. I put on the desk in the office.'

Peter arrived to find Ken and Emily is discussion about having a joint party for their upcoming birthdays. Ken opined that it would be greener for one thing and Peter joked: 'Yeah, cos it's not CO2 emissions causing global warming, it's all them little sausages on cocktail sticks.' Emily asked if they were decided on a joint party in The Rovers then and Ken confirmed yes. Peter told them he'd just popped into remind them it was Simon's recorder recital that afternoon and Blanche beamed: 'Like we need reminding, the amount he's practised.'

Sally asked why he would have sent it to the garage and Kev shrugged that maybe he wasn't allowed to write to their home address. He began to read but she cried: 'No, tear it up. I know what's coming next. I wish Rosie had never taken that money.' Kev asked why she was saying that now and she cried: 'It's all part of his master plan.' Her face contorted with barely suppressed rage she snarled: 'Well he's not going to win. I am going to nip it in the bud!'

Ashley arrived home with a bandage on and wailed: See what you've done? I nearly cut me finger off.' Claire asked how that was her fault and he cried: 'Cos I can't concentrate can I? My mind keeps wandering!' She retorted: 'You need something to keep your mind off it. I'm baking scones.' but he cried: 'I am in no fit state to be using sharp implements, unless I plunge one into me heart and have done with it!'

He fell to his knees and cried: 'Do you want me to beg? I am happy to beg. Claire, I am desperate. If we don't do something I...' He was interrupted as the theme from The Dambusters filled the air and yelled, his face red with rage and sexual frustration: 'That flaming bell! What's he playing now?'

Armed with clipboard and attitude, Sally told Dev she assumed he was against John moving into the street. He cried: 'Of course I am.' and she informed him she was organising a meeting in The Rovers that evening to see if they were all speaking with one voice and to let John Stape know exactly what they think. He told her to count him in and she cried: 'Good. Seven thirty in The Rovers.' They all traipsed out the accompaniment of a Clanger and The Twilight Zone.

As Sally headed across the street to canvas Norris, Molly sighed: 'I suppose this puts the kibosh on our plans.' Kev replied: 'Not necessarily.' She snorted: ' Can you see her letting you go anywhere tonight?' but he whispered back: 'Don't give up the ghost just yet.' and watched as Sally re-crossed the street and headed for Ashley and Claire's.

As she knocked on the door, Molly went back into the shop accompanied by another two foghorn blasts. As the door opened, she asked: 'Ashley, have you received a letter from John Stape today?' and he raged: 'Yes, and I'm furious about it but I'm more furious about that flaming bell!' He pushed past her and headed for the shop with Claire in pursuit crying: 'You can't go confronting people in this mood Ashley!' Her cries fell on deaf ears as he marched into the shop to yet another chorus of Enter The Gladiators.

He raged: 'That bell is a public nuisance! Take it down or I'll smash it to pieces.' and Claire cried: 'Please excuse my husband. His brain has been addled by the excessive noise pollution.' Umed spluttered indignantly that no-one else had complained. Ashley yelled: 'We live next door! It's torture!' Claire agreed: 'Especially the machine gun fire and the theme from Star Wars!' Another burst of automatic weapon fire rang out as Graeme walked in on the confrontation.

Umed beamed: 'Ah, you would rather it played something more relaxing. Moonlight Sonata perhaps.' and began to jab at the controls. Ashley finally snapped and grabbed hold of him as he tried to wrest it from his grasp. Failing in this, he marched towards the bell but Graeme managed to bar his way and, crying: 'Ashley. Step away from the bell!' and pulled his boss's head onto his shoulders and cooed soothingly: 'Clear your head. It's alright. I'm here now.'

At No. 1, Sally squawked: 'I take it you're against a convicted kidnapper living on the street?' Blanche confirmed that she was indeed but Ken told her: 'I don't think it's as simple as that.' She told him she was disappointed to hear that but hoped he would at least come to the meeting in The Rovers and listen to the opinions of his friends and neighbours before writing back. He told her he would be there and Blanche beamed: 'I wouldn't miss it for the world.' Kev muttered that he felt like a Jehovah's Witness and Sally twittered: 'Well it is a moral crusade.' He grumped: 'Yeah, with me trailing behind you when I should be fixing cars!'

She told him she assumed he felt the same way she did and he cried: 'I do but you just go barging in. This meeting for instance. How do you know I've not got anything planned?' She asked if he had and he replied: 'I was thinking of going for a run actually. A charity 10k in Glasgow.' She told him took ages to plan something like that and he blustered: 'I've known about it for ages. It's just crept up on me.' She asked when he would leave and when he said tonight she cried: 'Tonight? We've got the meeting tonight.' He huffed: 'Yeah, which you went and planned without a word to me.' but she told him flatly: 'I'm sorry Kevin but I need you by side for things like this!'

Graeme asked Claire if she had any brandy. Ashley snapped that he didn't want brandy and Graeme cried: 'No but I do. That was well scary. I thought you were gonna thump him.' Ashley cried: 'Shouldn't you be getting back to the shop?' but Graeme replied serenely: 'It's fine, I put a note on the door telling people to help themselves and put the money in the till.' Ashley practically exploded and Graeme cried hastily: 'It was a joke. Man, you are so tense today. Message understood, I'm off and don't worry about the bell. I'll take care of it.' Claire told him not to get involved but he smiled: 'It's okay. There's more than one way to skin a squirrel. Laters.'

Claire looked at the state of her husband and told him softly: 'Right you, let's go upstairs and let off some steam before you kill somebody.' He sighed: 'I've been stupid and selfish. I will have the op. I don't want to risk your health again. She asked if he was sure. He nodded and as she put her arms round him it looked like Ashley's drought would soon reach a happy finish.

After calling Luke to apologise for not being in most of the day, Sally asked Kevin: 'Are you in a sulk?' The answer was a decidedly sulky: 'Nope.' She told him it looked like he was and he wailed: 'I work flaming hard over there.' She told him she knew that and he moaned: 'It's the only think that's just for me. The only time I get to switch off, unwind. Oh just forget it!'

With uncustomary reasonableness, Sally sighed: 'You're right. I do just charge in. Go to Glasgow. Go on the run.' He asked: 'Are you sure.? What about tonight?' and she smiled: 'I think I've got enough front for both us and a big enough gob, don't you?' He added casually: 'I was thinking of asking Molly. See if she fancied joining me.' He couldn't believe his luck as his unsuspecting wife shrugged: 'Yeah, why not? It's a long way to go on your own.'

Two minutes later, he was at the garage and Ty cried: 'Here's the part timer.' Kev told him: 'Yep, and you're going to have to manage the rest of the day without me, and tomorrow too.' Molly asked: 'You and Sally off to Highfield jail to persuade them not to let John Stape out.?' and almost gasped as he replied: 'As a matter of fact I'm off to bonny Scotland to do a 10k run up there. Actually, I was going to ask you if you fancied it.' She replied with wide eyed innocence: 'Me?' He shrugged: 'It'll be a long train journey on me own and we had a great time that last run we did together.'

She asked when he was going and he replied: 'Today, after work. I know it's a bit short notice. And I don't want to drag you away from your husband.' Ty, every bit as unsuspecting as Sally, told her he didn't mind if she wanted to go and enthused: 'I can get started on the games room. You'll have to square it with Dev though.'

She replied: 'He owes me loads of time and I've never been to Glasgow.' then turned to Kevin and told him: 'Yeah, I'd love to go with you.' As Ty went to answer the phone, she asked quietly: 'How does God not strike us down?' and Kevin smiled: 'You've not heard the best bit yet. We're not going to Glasgow. You know that dream you had last night? I'm going to make it come true.'
