Molly was alarmed as Ty told her maybe he should go with her: 'You know, see you cross the finish line, make up for last time.' She asked who would mind the garage and he sighed: 'That's the problem isn't it?' and was relieved as he told her: 'Next race I'll be there, I promise.'

Fiz tried to talk to Chesney about where they were going to live but they were interrupted as Sophie arrived with a book he needed to borrow. He asked if she was stopping for a bit but she sighed: 'No, my mum is on the warpath.' He asked what she'd done and she cried: 'Me? Nothing. It's them stupid letters that John Stape sent.' Fiz cried: What letters? I know he wrote to Chez.' and was stunned as Sophie cried: 'You didn't even know about it? He wrote to everybody, even Eddie Windass.' Fiz replied: 'Oh, you mean to everybody except his wife.' Fiz groaned as Sophie told her what the letters said and that her mum was holding a meeting in the pub later.

The Barlows arrived home from Simon's recorder recital with Peter severely miffed that Leanne had missed it. Ken pointed out that Simon had three generation of his family in the audience but Peter complained: 'He was looking for her in the audience. I could see him.' Blanche snorted: 'No he was not. He was sat bolt upright on that stage giving that recorder some gyp. Put me in mind of Acker Bilk!' He huffed that she shouldn't make promises she couldn't keep but Blanche jibed: 'It could have been worse. He could have turned up drunk.'

Leanne arrived and told Peter she was so sorry for missing Simon's performance. She asked Simon how it went and, holding two thumbs aloft, he beamed: 'Nailed it!' She turned to Peter and told him she was sorry again but the look on his face told her he was far from in a forgiving mood.

Molly arrived as Kevin finished his packing and Sally told them they must be mad: 'Glasgow in October? You'll freeze to death.' With a sly look at Molly, Kevin replied: 'Oh we'll soon get warmed up.' then added: 'Pounding the streets.' They were interrupted by Sophie who came down the stairs carrying her laptop with a puzzled frown on her face and asked: 'Dad? Are you gay?'

He asked what sort of question that was but she asked him again then told them: 'I've just been on the net and there is a run on in Glasgow tomorrow. The Glasgay 10k!' As Sally snickered, Kevin blustered: 'You don't have to be gay to run in it. There'll be loads of straight people running.' but Sophie read: 'Gay men and women will be descending from all over the world for Scotland's campest fun run it says here.' Molly hastily interjected: 'We're running to support gay charities. I've a cousin who's gay.' and Kev added: 'And I'm a lot more open minded than you think.' Sophie giggled as Sally laughed that she hoped he'd packed his nice tight running shorts.

Graeme pulled up outside the shop and Dev commented: 'You have more outfits than Mr Benn.' Graeme asked who Mr Benn was and Dev sighed: 'Before your time.' Graeme then informed them that he was starting a window cleaning round to go with his gardening services: 'Butchering is my vocation but I need other strings to my bow.' Dev told him they already had a window cleaner who did a good job but Graeme countered winningly: 'But not as good a job as me and, as a special introductory offer, I'll clean your windows for nothing.'

Leanne told Peter she was sorry again and assured him there would be plenty of other performances. He told her it wasn't just about Simon: 'You let me down as well Lee. I was dreading going back into that school, facing all those parents after I made such a fool of myself last Christmas and, today, that was the first time I felt I could walk back into that place with my head held high, slay a few demons, complete my rehabilitation. I wanted you with me. Not me dad, not Blanche, not Deirdre. You. My girlfriend. My partner.'

She told him partner sounded nice and he sighed: 'A lot of people round here think I only got you back cos I need someone to look after Simon but I'm the one needs looking after, needs taking care of. It's me that needs keeping on the straight and narrow.' She bent down to him and told him softly: 'Then I'll never let you down again. Either of you.'

It was panic stations for Kevin as they set off for the train station on the bus only for him to realise he had forgotten to pack, of all things, his running shoes. A hasty ring of the bell later, they were back of the bus and he was heading back to the house.

He crept back into the house and quietly picked up his trainers in the hopes that Sally wouldn't hear but she walked in and saw him. He froze but she merely laughed: 'Honestly. You'd forget your head if it wasn't screwed on.' He smiled meekly and made a hasty exit back to his waiting lover.

Fiz asked why on earth John would have done something like that: 'Last time I saw him I said you and me had had words about where we would live and he said leave it with me!' Chesney told her: 'Well whatever he was trying to achieve it has backfired massively.' She sobbed that he played right into Sally's hands and that she'd be on a mission now. Chez put his hand on hers and told her not to worry: 'No-one might turn up. The pub could be empty.' but she wailed: 'It's like he's been to court, been punished and now he gets to go to court all over again. The court of Sally Webster.' He told her to ignore her but she cried: 'I can't. Someone should be there to speak up for him!'

Graeme began his window clean and squinted through the numbers above the door to make sure Dev and Umed were both occupied...

... and quickly whipped out a spanner and began to unbolt the loudspeaker from the wall.

He quickly slipped it back into his pocket as Umed came out, looked at his progress and asked: 'Why are you so slow? You haven't done one window.' Graeme retorted that he was being through and professional and, seemingly satisfied, Umed went back inside again and the spanner came back out to the appropriate sound of the James Bond theme.

Molly was thrilled to find that Kevin has booked them in at a flash hotel in Chester and sighed dreamily as he told her: 'For the next twenty four hours there's no more sneaking about. We can behave just like a normal couple.'

Umed looked as Graeme came in but didn't seem to notice that there wasn't any machine gun fire or film theme tune accompanying his entrance. He gulped: 'Er, bit of a disaster, man.' Dev asked what had happened and he replied: 'I was determined to do a good job you know, really giving it some welly, putting my heart and soul into it but there was bugs on the glass, ingrained like they had been there since the sixties.' Dev asked what happened, he mumbled: 'I slipped.' and Dev cried again: 'What happened?'

He confessed: 'I knocked the doorbell off!' Umed cried in horror: 'You idiot! You haven't broken it?' Graeme mumbled: 'I think I might have.' and Umed almost fainted as he fished the dripping speaker out of his bucket. It looked like, as Bob Dylan almost said, the chimes they are a changing!

Molly gasped as she saw their hotel room and told Kevin it must have cost a fortune. He asked what she wanted to do first and she laughed: 'Why? To see the sights of Chester, of course.'

He told her the receptionist had given them some leaflets and she replied: 'Yeah, there's that historic monument. What's it called? It's supposed to be amazing. Really old but really well preserved?' He frowned: 'Like a castle?' She grinned back playfully: 'No, you!' and they rolled around playfully on the bed as they laughed.

Dev watched in astonishment as Umed tried to revive his beloved gadget with a hairdryer and cooed: 'Don't worry my darling. You'll be okay.' He cried: 'Umed, it's as dead as a doorbell! Now can we just get a normal one? One that goes ding dong. One that doesn't annoy the neighbours.' Umed fumed: 'I can't believe my ears. This buffoon causes criminal damage and you are practically congratulating him!'

Umed gasped in disbelief as Dev corrected him: 'You mean useful damage. And I'm not practically congratulating him, I am congratulating him. Graeme lad, well done. And I know you said you'd do the windows for free but I insist on paying you.' Umed watched as Dev took money from the till and handed it to Graeme and wailed miserably: 'You are in cahoots!'

Leanne told Peter how she had found that the till over rang: 'But the area moron didn't want to believe us. That's why I couldn't get to the recital. I was under interrogation. It got sorted in the end, well for today anyway. As long as that idiot is in charge there's always going to be problems.' He remarked that her job didn't exactly sound a barrel of laughs but she smiled: 'No but I intend to forget all about it now while you massage my feet.'

Molly analysed her and Kevin's relationship as she told him: 'I find myself wondering how I got into this mess. It's so not like me to cheat on my partner.' He told her that you can't help who you fall in love with but she replied: 'Yes you can. I wouldn't fall in love with Jason even if he is drop dead gorgeous. Yet I fell in love with you knowing that you are totally unsuitable and that it can't go anywhere. It just makes me want you all the more. I should have done all this before I got married.' He asked if she thought she had got married too young and she replied: 'I'm saying I was naive.'

She continued: 'I thought Tyrone would be enough, got caught up in all the wedding stuff.' Kev shifted guiltily as she told him: 'Tyrone is a good man. He is sweet. But he's not enough any more.' He told her it was as if they were meant to be together: 'Or maybe I'm saying that to make me feel less guilty.' She asked if he felt guilty and he asked: 'Don't you?' but she replied: 'It doesn't stop me sleeping with you though. None of it matters, because you're not gonna leave Sally and I'm not gonna leave Tyrone. When I think about telling Tyrone, it would be like kicking a puppy.' Kev sighed as he replied: 'It's a good job we're both nice people. We could cause total mayhem if we weren't.'

The residents began to assemble for the meeting, Blanche moaning: 'No seats. I said we should have come early.' Roy told Ken: 'A frank exchange of views is all very well but if this descends into rabble rousing...' Ken snorted: 'Descends? Look at the face on Sally Webster.' Across the bar, Rosie asked Sally if she's written a speech. Sally hissed: 'Rosie? No, I am going to speak from the heart.' but the cause of the entire thing merely whined: 'Well keep it short Mother cos I'm meeting Minnie in a club in half an hour!'

Sally started things off thanking everyone for coming but then was into shrieking harpy mode in an instant as she screeched: 'The wellbeing of our children is something we all care about and we have to do everything in our power to protect them.' Cue much hear hearing and table thumping from the likes of Dev and Blanche but the pub fell silent as the doors opened and a lone figure walked in.

Sally looked uncomfortable as Fiz asked, her eyes boring into her: 'Sorry. Is this a private party?' Roy told her she had as much right to be there as anyone else, Ken adding: 'More, in fact, than some we could mention.' Eddie told Sally to carry on and she squawked: 'As you all know, a year ago my daughter Rosie was abducted by John Stape, her former teacher.' at which point Rosie began primping her hair and simpering like the witless idiot that she is, as if preparing for another photo shoot for the local rag.

As Sally stirred her virtual cauldron, her husband was busy walking along with his arm round Molly. She apologised for getting heavy earlier and told him: 'I do want it all but I'm happy to take what I can get and I promise that from now on you and me are going to savour every moment that we get together.'

Sally dismissed John's letters as a cheap stunt to curry favour: 'He wants you to think he's a decent man who has served his time.' Fiz protested: 'He is!' Sally snarled: 'He is not. he's a devious...' Roy objected but she screamed over him: 'He is a devious manipulative predator!' Roy told her that wasn't fair but Dev cried that he wouldn't be saying that if he had an eighteen year old daughter. Sally screeched: 'We don't have to take this. At the end of his letter he says he will be grateful for any responses that help them decide what to do. Give him our answer. Write to him tonight and tell him he is not welcome on this street!'

As her supporters applauded, Sally screeched manically: 'I'm going to go one further. I'm going to burn this letter and send him the ashes.' Roy opined that it was like a meeting of the Ku Klux Clan and Ken agreed and told her firmly: 'He has served his sentence. It's not up to you where he lives.' Graeme banged on the bar and cried: 'Well said Kenny boy!'

Blanche snorted: 'You would say that. You're an ex con as well.' Norris opined with a sideways look at Rosie: 'Well I find myself in the unusual position having no sympathy for the criminal or his victim.' Fiz cried plaintively: 'All John wants is to put the past behind us and make a fresh start!' but Sally spat: 'Fine. Well go and find somewhere else to live!'

Fiz cried that they had Chesney to consider but Sally merely screeched: 'Why should my daughters, why should I have to put up with him living on our street? How is that going to make us feel.' Fix cried that John was deeply sorry for what he did: 'He said so in court" She looked round and then climbed up onto a chair and continued: 'And he has never tried to wriggle out of any charges. He has taken his punishment and has said sorry over and over again! He even gave Rosie the money from the sale of his gran's house!'

Rosie spluttered moronically that it was just a ruse but looked uncomfortable as Fiz screamed: 'You drive round in a sports car you bought with that money!' Sally cried indignantly: 'He owed Rosie that money!' but was looking on shaky ground as Fiz cried passionately: 'I love John. I know what he did was wrong but he is still a good person. He's written to you all to ask for your permission to live here. He doesn't have to do that. He's done that because he cares what you think. He knows, like I know, that you are all good, decent and fair minded people.'

There was no mistaking the passion and conviction in Fiz's words and Ken raised his hands and began to clap. Roy and Graeme followed and soon the applause spread throughout the bar far louder than that received by Sally from her small army of small minded supporters. As climbed down from her perch, Sally's face was picture of screwed up bile and fury.
