David and Gail were amused to find Joe had been up with the lark, putting the finishing touches to the boat. She asked if he fancied a proper cup of coffee at Roy's to celebrate and he eagerly agreed. She asked: 'David?' and even the normally truculent teen seemed in a happy mood as he replied: 'Why not? Saves making me own at work.'

Peter told Leanne that he was going to call George and invite him round after tea to meet Simon properly. She asked if he was sure and he sighed: 'No, but he is his granddad and all he has left of Lucy. Besides, he's not going to just go away is he?' She smiled and pointed out that it would save them answering Simon's endless questions and shouted up the stairs at Simon to get a move on. Peter smiled back: 'Yeah, let George answer his questions. And you never know, maybe he'll have some tips on getting him ready for school on time!'

Roy looked rather disconcerted to receive a bottle of expensive champagne via a courier. As he suspected, attached was a thank you card from Tony. Gail joked: 'Getting your booze delivered now Roy, or have you got a secret admirer?' He mumbled: 'I'm not a drinker, as you know.' and David laughed: 'Well if you don't want it. Joe can always smash it over his boat when it has the big launch.' Joe enthused to Gail: 'Hey, you're not working this weekend. We could take it for a trial run out on the lakes.' Gail shifted uneasily and David told her: 'Yeah, I bet you can't wait for that.'

Gail mumbled that she might be working and David smiled: 'Not both days though.' Joe enthused: 'There's nothing like it. Open water, fun. You forget everything out there.' David told him: 'Me mam doesn't.' Joe looked puzzled and Gail confessed: 'I don't really like water. I still get nightmares.' The penny finally dropped and Joe cried: 'Oh Gail. I am so sorry. I didn't think.' David joked that she still had trouble running a bath and she added with an apologetic smile: 'I just got carried away with getting the boat ready. I never gave a thought to actually going out in it.'

Finding Emily about to do the windows, Norris told her he said he would do them. She told him he was far too busy and he moaned about one of his paperboys not turning in again but then enthused: 'The good news is I think I've found a suitable assistant. He's coming in this afternoon. Name of Horace Steele.' Graeme smiled: 'I'm getting a vibe. Horace and Norris. Nice. See whichever way you spin it, Ashley and Graeme or Graeme and Ashley, there's just no ring to it.' Norris eyed him and told Emily: 'I'd ask him what he's blethering on about but I'm afraid he might tell me.'

Graeme told her he would do her windows but Norris huffed: 'You will not. You've been a petty criminal, and not a very good one at that, a cack-handed gardener and from the bone splinters I found in your chicken fillets, you're no butcher either!' The wind was taken out of his sails as Emily told him:: 'Those fillets were from Freshco.' Graeme grinned: 'While he's thinking of ways to avoid apologising for slurring me, how about it?' Emily cried: 'Yes please!' and, telling her he'd be back to do them in a bit, Graeme rode happily off on his trusty steed.

Joe had some bad news for Gail. His part time job at the shop was over as it was closing down. Gail assured him that he was a skilled joiner and something would turn up and he seemed to cheer up a little. As he hitched the trailer to his van with David, she asked: Taking the boat out?' and he sighed: 'Well I'm doing nowt else today now, am I?' Tina happened by and asked: 'Is it actually finished then?' Joe asked why she was so surprised and she replied with a smile: 'Cois I know you.' He told her that it was indeed finished and now he was going to take it out and catch some fish for tea.' Gail remarked that David used to love fishing and used to go with Martin all the time.

Gail asked David why he didn't go with Joe. Neither he or Joe seemed particularly keen on the idea but when Tina told Joe: 'I'd come if I wasn't working. You always promised to teach me to sail.', David suddenly seemed a bit more interested and mused: 'Maybe we could both go and he could teach us both.' Tina retorted that she didn't think Zoe would be too happy about that but he shrugged: 'Zoe doesn't have to know.'

He asked Joe: 'How about it then? Two rods, twice the chance of catching something.' Joe still looked a little reluctant but then nodded and told him to get his fishing gear.

Emily answered a knock at the door and was surprised and delighted to find Frieda stood there. She cried: 'You had me so worried when you phoned earlier. Whatever's wrong?'

Frieda blurted: 'I've been sacked. I was wondering if I could stay with you for a few days.' Emily gave her a hug and assured her: 'Of course you can. Come inside.'

Tony asked Maria if she'd seen Roy and she replied: 'Like I've had time to go to the cafe. Why are you worried about Roy?' He blustered: 'It was a big night for him too, traumatic. All the drugs they were pumping into me. I didn't know what was real, what was my mind playing tricks.' She frowned and asked why he thought that would affect Roy but he suddenly cried: 'I have to go see him.' and tried to get out of bed. Maria told him he was doing no such thing and ordered him back into bed.

Roy signed for yet another delivery and Hayley opened it to find tickets to see Oliver in the West End. Roy was not pleased and sighed: 'As I feared, another gift from Tony Gordon. The cheque for the newts was sufficient enough.' Janice appeared at the counter to get another coffee and mused: 'Maybe now he's been close to the real Underworld he's a new man.' Roy asked what she meant by that and she shrugged: 'Blokes like Tony Gordon don't give owt for nowt. They always want something in return.'

He took off his apron and asked Hayley: 'You'll be alright minding the cafe till I get back?' She sighed wearily and pleaded with him just to leave it but he told her firmly: No, this needs sorting out.'

At the hospital, Roy told Tony he had received his gifts but felt he needed to return them. Tony told him they were inadequate tokens but the last thing he wanted to do was offend him. Roy continued: 'Actually, that's not the only reason I am here. Last night, things were said.'

Tony told him: 'To be honest I don't really remember anything after the factory.' but it looked like he wasn't going to get off the hook that easily as Roy replied pointedly: 'Well perhaps if we have a chat, things might come back. Like doing a crossword, fill in one bit and something else reveals itself.'

As Simon arrived home from school, George said hello and told Simon he owed him an apology: 'Coming up to you in the street like that. It must have been a bit of a shock.' Simon told him it was alright then asked outright: 'Why have I never seen you before?' George was taken aback by his directness but replied honestly: 'Because I didn't know about you.' Simon asked why and he told him gently: 'Because I went away. I lost touch with your mother.' Again, Simon's response was: 'Why?' and George again replied honestly: 'Because I fell out with your real grandmother and your mummy stayed with her.'

Eve clarified: 'Like you did when your mummy and daddy fell out, when you were a baby.' Keen to lighten things, Peter asked Eve how it felt to suddenly become a grandma but Simon opined: 'You're not my grandma, Deirdre is.' Eve smiled gently: 'Okay, well can I be your nana then?' Simon told her that would be fine and Leanne ushered him off to get changed out of his school clothes.

Eve told Peter that Simon was a credit to him. He thanked her but added: 'Not just me, Leanne as well, and Lucy of course.' George asked if Simon had asked any questions about him and Peter smiled: 'Oh if Simon has something to ask he won't ask me. Trust me, you'll feel like you've gone ten rounds with Jeremy Paxman by the time you go home.'

Emily told Frieda that it must have been a shock to lose her job. She replied that working with her boss had always been like working with a ticking time bomb. Emily frowned: 'It's not like you to put up with something like that. Not even for a job.' Frieda grinned and confided: 'Well, I did get my revenge.' and went over to her bag and pulled something out.

Appearing in the doorway, Graeme cried: 'Whoa!' As Frieda held the item aloft, Emily explained: 'This is Graeme. He's doing my windows.' and Graeme added: 'Downstairs today, upstairs tomorrow. Ladder issues. You stole that?' Frieda replied a little shamefacedly: 'Yes.'

Emily gasped: 'You stole that poor woman's artificial leg?' Frieda blustered: 'She's not that poor woman. She's a spiteful mean bully! And she's got a spare.' Emily told her it was still theft and asked why she took it in the first place. Frieda reasoned: 'Because she hates her spare. It's the wrong colour and the knee squeaks.' Emily pointed out she could be arrested but Graeme interjected: 'No, the police won't be interested.' She asked why not and he hooted: 'The woman hasn't got a leg to stand on!'

Roy told Tony: 'What concerns me is that you thought you were dying. There was a confessional nature to what you said.' Tony told him again that it was drugs and dreams: 'What happened that night still gives me nightmares.' Roy replied: 'What you said was, and your words gave me a somewhat sleepless night, I killed Liam, you said. I killed Liam.' Tony replied: 'It was my stag night. Liam was my best man. it's the only reason he was there. Roy whether I die now or in fifty years, and no matter how many people tell me it was an accident, I'll always blame myself.'

Roy replied that it was difficult to imagine what it must be like to have another man's death on your conscience and that he could see how heavily it was weighing on him. Anxious to bring the conversation to a close, Tony told him wearily: ;I'm sorry Roy, this chat has really taken it out of me.'

As Roy headed to the door, Tony called after him: 'I'm glad I've put your mind at rest.' Roy's face was unreadable as he stopped and replied: 'Your gifts. I will leave them with Maria.' Tony told him there was no need but Roy was quite insistent and Tony conceded: 'Whatever makes you happy Roy.' He watched as Roy left, clearly very concerned as to whether Roy believed him or not.

With it now dark and no sign of David and Joe, and no answer from his phone, Gail called David. As he answered she cried: 'I've been trying to call Joe but got no answer. What? Well of course I am worried: What do you mean, lifeboat?' The line when dead and a look of panic spread across her face.

Two seconds later, the front door opened and the pair walked in laughing their heads off. David cried: 'Reel her in.' and laughing with relief, she told him he wasn't funny. She asked if they had a good time and Joe enthused: 'Brilliant. The boats not ready for the Americas cup yet mind.' She asked David if he had a good time and he beamed: 'Yeh, bit cold, but yeh!' She asked: 'So, fish for tea?' Joe replied: 'It certainly is.' and held out his bag. David reached inside and, as he pulled out the contents, hooted: 'And we caught some mushy peas as well!'

As he handed them their coats, Simon asked George: 'Are you going away now, like you did withy my mummy?' George assured him: 'No Simon, no. We're just going home. We would like to see lots more of you.' Peter, pleased that the evening had gone as well as it had, interjected: 'Then maybe we could start with you coming round for your tea tomorrow night?' George was thrilled and told him that would be wonderful.

George sat down and told Simon: 'Listen, if you and your daddy want me around then I will be.' Simon smiled and shook his hand as Eve told him: 'I will make sure of that.'

Peter thanked then for coming again and , as they were heading for the door, Eve asked: 'Oh, would it be alright if we brought him a present?' He replied: 'Yes, of course., That would be really nice. A book, a DVD, anything.' and with that they took their leave.

Gail told Joe she was glad he was enjoying the boat. He replied: 'Until I sell it.' She frowned and he told her: 'It's one thing you supporting me but not with a huge toy out there.' She told him the alternative was him brooding and she'd sooner he was out there catching fish: 'Besides, it will be worth more in Spring, when sensible people think about new kitchens. And David seems more relaxed too which can only be a good thing.' Joe admitted: 'He was actually very good company today.' and smiled as he added: 'Almost human.'

Over in Victoria Street, Roy was doing what he does best, namely worrying and fretting. Hayley told him: Well surely the fact that it makes no sense is the one thing that makes sense. He was out of his mind on drugs and the one thing we know is that he didn't kill Liam. It was a car and Tony wasn't driving it.' He told her he had considered that: 'But what if the driver was just as much a tool as the car itself. both doing Tony's bidding.'

Hayley began to answer but he continued: 'Which is the theory that Maria advanced when she thought he was responsible.' She pointed out that Maria had admitted she was wrong but he cried: 'But what if she was right?' What if, instead of addling his brain, the drugs lowered his defences and made him speak the truth.' She told him that Tony obviously felt guilty because it was his stag night.

Roy told her: 'What concerns me is that when I quoted his confession back to him he didn't seem surprised.' Hayley shrugged: 'So?' and he cried: 'Anyone who was innocent would at least be shocked or surprised! He wasn't. He had his story all ready like he'd been working on it.' Hayley told him he probably just felt embarrassed and silly but Roy insisted: 'Hayley, I know what he said. I know what he meant! He killed Liam!'

Hayley asked him: 'Roy, promise me one thing? You won't say this to anybody else. Look how mad everyone thought Maria was when she said it. No-one will believe you.' He gasped: 'You are asking me to cover up a murder!' and she sighed wearily as he told her firmly: 'I don't think I can do that Hayley.'
