Sally wittered: 'Do you think six bottles or red and six of white will be enough? Only I don't want the Richardson's to think we're stingy but I don't want them to think we've got a drink problem either. Maybe we could get some bubbly. Nothing too cheap, something decent. What do you think?' Kevin's mind was, as usual, miles away and his reply was a distant: 'Whatever.'

Audrey arrived at Gail's and Gail immediately told her that if she'd come for David he wouldn't be in to work that day. Audrey snorted: 'I came to see you! Anyway., you don't think I'd let him loose with a pair of scissors do you?' Gail told her not to start and that it wasn't all David's fault: 'He's broken hearted over Tina.' Ted confirmed: 'I agree. I've never seen him so unhappy.' and Audrey sighed: 'Well what are we going to do? He's a big enough handful when he's in a good mood!' She bit her tongue quickly as David came downstairs.

She hastily told him that he didn't need to worry about work today and he replied sarkily: 'I wasn't.' Gail told him he looked terrible and he retorted: 'Well I couldn't sleep. What's your excuse?' She sighed: 'David, talk to me.' but he told her there was nothing to talk about and went miserably back upstairs.

A blonde businesswoman pulled up at the garage and told Kevin brusquely: 'I only left the thing for five minutes and some little scumbag slashed the tyre. I've got meetings all afternoon so I need it back asap. Hello?' but Kevin's mind was elsewhere as he watched Tyrone kissing Molly goodbye on the doorstep opposite.

He mumbled: 'Er, yeah, it shouldn't be a problem, just leave it with us and we'll get it sorted.' She looked at him then asked sarcastically: 'And are you going to tell me when it will be ready or should I just guess?' He told her to come back around two and she handed him the keys with a withering look and stomped off. Ambling over, Ty watched her and joked: 'Looks like you had your hands full there mate. I don't know about her car but her suspension's okay. Sorry I'm a bit late. I slept through the alarm.' Kev grunted: 'Good night was it?' and looked sick as Ty winked: 'Just a quiet one in with Mol. know what I mean?'

Maria awoke to find the baby gone and rushed downstairs in a panic to find Tony nursing him. He told her he'd started crying so he'd brought him down. She wailed: 'What kind of mother sleeps through her baby crying?' but he reassured her: 'A knackered one.' She asked what would happen next time when he wasn't there but he smiled: 'You're going to be a great mother. Stop worrying. You don't need me, or Audrey or anyone. How about you finish feeding the wee man and I'll make the adults a coffee?'

As he went into the kitchen, she looked anxiously at his already packed bag sat on the dining table and didn't look happy at the prospect of Tony going home that day.

Joe answered the door and was taken aback as Graeme shoved a bottle of tablets into his hand. He whispered: 'I am so grateful. What do I owe you?' Graeme replied: 'Nothing, I called in a favour but listen, yeah? This ain't my bag anymore. I'm going for the reformed character kind of thing so it's just a one off, okay?' Joe was about to reply but, seeing Gail coming to the door, Graeme cried hastily: 'Gail! Looking fragrant as ever!!'

She thanked him but told him if he'd come to see David he wasn't up to seeing anyone at the moment. He nodded: 'Say no more. I know only too well how the wounded heart of a young man can be likened to a fragile young bird. Although talking of birds, my mate Trev's sister, well she's actually his twin so she's not much to look at, but a comforting pair of arms if you get my drift so if Dave gets a bit desperate...' Gail smiled that she'd let him know and Graeme beamed: 'Aw, I'd love to have you as my mum. He's a very lucky boy. See you.' As he walked off, Gail watched him go and asked Joe: 'Is it just me?' and he smiled: 'No.'

Molly turned up at the garage and Kev told her Ty was out on a job. She smiled: 'I know. I saw him go. How long do you think he'll be?' He told her an hour or two and she purred: 'I was wondering if you wanted to get a bite to eat, or talk.' He smirked: 'Talk?' She replied that she wanted to be alone with him too but it was too risky to go to his and that Jack wasn't out till later that afternoon.. He smiled and told her he had a better idea.

He pulled the garage doors shut and told her to get into the car that the woman had left earlier. She gasped: 'What?' and, climbing into the driver seat, he cried: 'Get in and keep your head down till we are well away from here!' Molly didn't need telling twice and leapt enthusiastically into the car.

Suited and booted, Jason asked Tina how he looked and she smiled: 'If your bank manager is a middle aged woman who hasn't had it for a while I think we'll be in for a shower. You'll be fine. Come here.' She kissed him deeply and wished him good luck as he headed on his way.

She suddenly realised Gail had been watching and apologised telling her she didn't mean to rub her nose in it. Gail assured her she had nothing to apologise to her for. Tina sighed: 'Just David?' Gail replied: 'No, but he did love you Tina.' Tina told her that she loved him too but not any more. Gail asked: 'And Jason?' Tina told her he was good to her and made her happy and Gail smiled understandingly: 'I am pleased for you. I really am. I'll see you.'

Back from his job, Ty was happily sharing a brew with Bill and telling him all about saving his evening with Molly by cooking pizza and chips when the stern looking woman from earlier appeared in the doorway and demanded: 'Where's my car? Do you work here?' Ty began: 'Actually I'm a partner...' but she snapped: 'I bought my car in earlier. There was a man, short, middle aged, receding hair. I need some papers from my car for a meeting.' Ty hooted: 'That'll be Kev. I'll tell him you said that. He'll just be test driving it. Look you just chill, I'll get him on the mobile and get his ETA.' He gulped as he found Kev's phone switched off and asked hopefully: 'You ever tried cooking moussaka?'

David was in depressed beyond tablets mode and wandered out into the back yard to find Graeme stood in Sally's garden. He asked wheat he was doing and Graeme grinned: 'Trimming Sally's shrubbery. It's a dirty job but someone's got to do it. Look, I saw your mum earlier and she said you weren't feeling too good.' David sighed: 'Yeah. Dead perceptive is Gail.' Graeme sighed: 'How about this? I've just got paid so how about we go to the pub and drink till this crazy mixed up world begins to make sense or we chuck up, whichever comes first.' but David told him: 'No, you're alright. Thanks for the offer. Some other time maybe.'

Meanwhile, under a railway bridge not too far away, things were hotting up in a certain borrowed Beamer. Having got the hoary old gearstick and I thought you were just pleased to see me gag out of the way, Kevin and Molly were just about to get down to some serious infidelity when there was a knock on the car window.

Kev climbed hastily off Molly and blustered: 'Er, I know what it looks like mate but I can explain everything.' only for the copper to reply sarcastically: 'Oh good. let's start with the theory of relativity and then you can explain what you two are doing here... mate!'

As the grumpy woman hissed that she had been waiting over an hour, Ty asked her if she wanted a cup of tea but she cried: 'I want to know where that moron has taken my car!' Ty told her knew she was hacked off but Kevin wasn't a moron. She snorted: 'Says the moron's apprentice.' but he told her flatly: 'Kevin's a good bloke and if he's been held up there will be a good reason for it.'

Of course there was a reason though whether Ty would classify it as good if he knew was highly doubtful. As a subdued Kevin and Molly headed back, Molly got a sharp taste of what being a mistress means as Kevin pulled up a couple of streets away and told her: 'Well I can't take you all the way back can I?' She replied sarcastically: 'Oh well thanks for stopping the car at least!' and climbed out, slamming the car door.

Audrey popped in to see Maria and found her in a somewhat distressed and tearful state. She sobbed: 'I don't know, I just thought that once my baby was here and I could hold him, feel him next to me, that everything bad that had ever happened would just disappear but every time I look at him it just reminds me of him and what we've both lost. I know I shouldn't but I just feel so alone Audrey.'

All Audrey could do was hold the new mother as she cried, so alone and frightened was she of what the future would hold for her and a baby son.

It was a different kind of unhappiness David was feeling but it was every bit as deeply felt. As he lay in misery on the sofa, the front door opened and Ted walked in with a carrier bag then asked: 'Ham and mustard or cheese and pickle? Choose.' David took one and sighed: 'Aren't you going to ask me how I'm feeling then?' but Ted replied: 'I know how you're feeling. You're not the only one that's had your heart broken.' David smiled weakly: 'Oh yeah? What was his name?'

Ted replied: 'Actually the first time it was a girl. Her name was Iris. Iris Coyle. She lived a couple of doors away. We started going steady. I thought it was love. I thought she thought so too.' David asked what happened and Ted sighed: 'One day she just finished it. Started seeing this other lad. I was devastated. I couldn't eat, I couldn't sleep. But then many years and several lives later I met my James and I knew what love really felt like.'

David replied deadpan: 'So what you're saying is I should forget about girls altogether and get myself down Canal Street.' Ted smiled: 'What I'm saying is that I know how much you cared for Tina but that one day you'll look back and realise it wasn't meant to be.' This was small comfort to David and he lay back on the sofa again.

As he did so, Ted told him sadly: 'I'm sorry son. I don't think she'll be coming back this time.' In his heart, David knew this was true but it did nothing to ease his pain.

Tony arrived to find Maria just getting off the phone after Helen's hundredth phone call. He asked: 'Rough day?' and she confessed: 'If it's not been him crying it's been me.' He told her he didn't have to leave that day if she didn't want him to. She sighed that she didn't want him to feel he had to stay but he smiled: 'I'd only be going back to an empty flat.' She pointed out that at least he would get a decent night's sleep there but he grinned: 'Sleep's for wimps!'

As Kev handed her the car keys and told her to come back if she had any problem, the BMW owner snapped: 'If you think I'd ever come back you're even more stupid than your assistant looks!' but Kev growled: 'It's not his fault. You got anything to say you say it to me!' She gasped: 'How dare you speak like that to me?' but he told her bluntly: 'Just take you flash car and get lost, eh love?'

Pam asked Molly if she would do her a favour. She told her all about Bill replying to her lonely hearts ad but that he didn't know it was her and explained: 'You don't use your real name. You use a pseudodoodydoodah! He thinks I'm a blonde vivacious businesswoman. Anyway, now I've got to call him and arrange to meet up with him.' Molly frowned: 'Won't he recognise your voice?' Pam put an arm round her and smiled: 'Ah, not if I get someone else to do it for me.'

Jason returned from the bank but it was not good news. He told Tina that while the bank would give him a mortgage, he would have to come up with a twenty five percent deposit. Tina sighed: 'Where are we going to get money like that?' and Jason told her: 'We couldn't raise the money for a doll's house, never mind a flat!'

Joe suggested: 'Come on, let me buy you both a drink. If nothing else we might be able to come up with some ideas.' With a sigh, Tina and Jason put their arms round each other and followed him towards the pub.

David watched them from the upstairs window and anyone who has ever been dumped and had to watch their ex girlfriend arm in arm with a bigger, older, better off, better looking, better everything lad could understand the pain and misery etched on his face.

Bill was thrilled as he got the phone call and cried: 'Would you just give me a sec?' then held the phone away and yelled: 'Hold all my calls Miss Grimshaw!' Glancing down at the Lad's Mag he was reading, he told the caller: 'No you're not disturbing anything. I was just looking over some figures. You would? Yes, I know it. Right, I'll see you on Monday!'

As he rang off, he opened up the magazine and chuckled: 'Sorry girls, you're just going to have to wait your turn!'

Back in the shop, Pam enthused: 'You are a natural. You had me convinced you were me for a minute.' Molly laughed that she wouldn't want to be her when she walked into the restaurant and Bill saw who she really was. Pam assured her he would see the funny side. She clammed up as Kevin walked in lest he overhear and spoil the surprise and, telling Molly she'd see her later, she exited the shop.

Kev bought some shopping and a box of chocolates which he handed to Molly but she told him poutily that it would take more than that to win her round. Her eyes widened as he whispered: 'Well how about a night in a hotel, this weekend? Just you and me?' She mumbled that it wasn't a good idea and gasped: 'Once we do this there's no going back.' but he told her: 'I know. I don't think I want to go back.' He kissed her then grabbed his shopping and walked out of the shop, leaving her stood there breathless and her head spinning.
