Debbie first arrived in the village on Christmas Eve 2002 when Paddy and Emily Kirk fostered her while her mother Pat was in hospital. Debbie left the village on New Year’s Eve to go back to live with her mother, but returned two weeks later and told Emily that her mother was in a coma after drinking too much. It emerged that Cain and Charity were actually Debbie’s parents. Her mother was horrified to discover the past on her doorstep, particularly as she was now married to Chris Tate. Cain, meanwhile, became fiercely protective of his little girl.
