Steve qualified to make his third World Championship appearance by virtue of his displays in Players Championships during 2009, which included two runs to quarter-finals. He was knocked out by Phil Taylor having beaten Raymond Scholten in the first round.

A last 64 loser in the UK Open, he was a quarter-finalist at Bolton in 2007 in his best display so far in a major tournament for one of the fastest-throwing players in the sport.

Chris Mason inflicted defeat on his World Championship debut at the Circus Tavern four years ago, while Mark Dudbridge ended his hopes in the 2008 tournament.
