England striker Danny Welbeck had sympathy for Manchester United team-mate Ashley Young after he missed a penalty in the shoot-out defeat by Italy.
Young and Ashley Cole were denied from the spot as England crashed out 4-2 on penalties.
Welbeck told ITV Sport's Gabriel Clarke: "These things happen in football. Life's not just full of positives, you've got to take the negatives as well.
"Ashley's been sticking them away in practice all week. There's not much I can say.
"Ashley Young has the quality to put it away but unfortunately today it didn't happen."
