Hodgson praises England new-boys

England coach Roy Hodgson says his youthful England side impressed him with their winning performance against Italy in Berne.

"It was great to give our senior players a rest and blood so many young players," Hodgson told ITV's Gabriel Clarke. "I thought they answered the challenge in the best possible way."

And the England boss picked out Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley as one of the star performers.

"We know Tom Cleverley's a good player," Hodgson said. "We've been pleased to see him back in form, playing well for GB."

But Hodgson was quick to distance himself from suggestions the win over Italy marked a revolution in the way his England side would play.

"There wasn't a lot of difference between what we did tonight and what we did in the Euros," Hodgson said. "Maybe just tonight we showed composure on the ball and passed it a little bit better."
