Manchester United begin their Champions League campaign tomorrow night when they host Galatasary at Old Trafford.

Here are the likely key battles:

TOM CLEVERLEY v HAMIT ALTINTOP

Altintop is vastly experienced and if anyone is going to cause United trouble, he is the man. Cleverley though has made giant strides in the last 18 months, even if his most recent performance for England is best forgotten.

NEMANJA VIDIC v JOHAN ELMANDER

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has highlighted Manchester United's defence as being the key to improving chronic group stage form at Old Trafford. On his Bolton form, Elmander should be silenced easily enough. But the Red Devils skipper will know that on his day Elmander can be a capable opponent and needs to be wary.

ROBIN VAN PERSIE v EMMANUEL EBOUE

Not a direct match-up positionally but the pair share enough past history with Arsenal to want to get one over on their former team-mate. Van Persie has made a superb start to life at Old Trafford and the mere fact he was left out of the United starting line-up for their weekend win over Wigan proves how seriously Ferguson is taking Europe's group stage this term.
