Man City v Borussia Dortmund: key battles

JAVI GARCIA v MARIO GOTZE

Summer signing Javi Garcia faces arguably his stiffest test since arriving at Eastlands as he will look to curb the influence of Dortmund's 20-year-old rising star Mario Gotze. Garcia has already shown an appetite for the midfield battle and in Gotze, and fellow youngster Marco Reus, he will come up against Germany's next generation of midfield schemers. City are yet to keep a clean sheet this term and keeping both men quiet will go along way towards rectifying that.

DAVID SILVA v SEBASTIAN KEHL

Silva has not quite hit the heights of last season so far although he provided a glimpse of his best as he ran the City midfield in the 2-1 weekend win at Fulham. At the top of his game there are few players that can match Silva's creative influence although he can expect to be harried by the likes of Dortmund's veteran skipper Kehl, who has 31 Germany caps to his name.

CARLOS TEVEZ v MATS HUMMELS

Tevez hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons against German opposition this time a year ago following his infamous touchline spat at Bayern Munich. After missing most of last season because of it the Argentina striker's City future has somehow since been restored and his rehabilitation could be further enhanced should he grab a goal to kick-start his side's Champions League campaign. In Germany defender Hummels, however, he faces a player whose size and speed has drawn comparisons with Franz Beckenbauer.
