Hodgson: Pitch made life difficult

England manager Roy Hodgson said that the sodden surface at Warsaw's National Stadium made for a trickier tie than expected as they could only manage a draw against Poland in 2014 World Cup Qualifying Group H.

"It was quite difficult, the pitch was soggy and the ball wasn't moving that well," Hodgson told ITV reporter Gabriel Clarke. "It was a pitch more suited to a long-ball game than a passing game...but having said that I'm pleased with the point."

Hodgson also admitted that goalscorer Wayne Rooney did not have one of his better days, which explained his decision to substitute him for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with 20 minutes remaining.
