Arsenal take on German outfit Schalke on matchday three of their Champions League Group B campaign at Emirates Stadium tomorrow night.

Here, we take a look at some of the key battles ahead in north London:

THOMAS VERMAELEN v KLAAS-JAN HUNTELAAR

Captain Vermaelen is the leader at the heart of the Gunners' defence and the Belgian international will need no introduction to the threat posed by former Ajax team-mate Huntelaar, who has two European goals already this season.

SANTI CAZORLA v ROMAN NEUSTADTER

Spain international Cazorla has settled quickly following his summer move from Malaga and is Arsenal's main link to the attack. However, Ukrainian-born Neustadter will be out to cut off that supply line and so halt the Gunners' quick counter.

OLIVIER GIROUD v BENEDIKT HOWEDES

Giroud, a £12million summer signing, opened his Barclays Premier League account before the international break and was on target for France, but will need to improve on a lacklustre display at Norwich. Schalke captain Howedes will prove another stern opponent, the German defender now an experienced campaigner in both the Bundesliga and Europe.
