David De Gea - Alert to push away Aaron Ramsey's ball into the danger zone in the first half and deny Olivier Giroud late on, before Santi Cazorla's stoppage-time effort beat him. 6

Rafael - Had a perhaps fortunate role in the build-up to the opening goal, with Thomas Vermaelen making a hash of cutting out the full-back's cross to allow Robin van Persie to pounce. Continued to bomb forward, finding plenty of space down the right. 6

Rio Ferdinand - Generally looked composed whenever called upon at the back, although had a suspect moment when Andre Santos' cross went through his legs. 6

Jonny Evans - Did a tidy job in defence alongside Ferdinand. 6

Patrice Evra - Like Rafael, relished the chances he got to contribute to the attack from out wide. Also fulfilled his duties at the back and capped a solid performance with a headed goal after the break. 7

Antonio Valencia - Had the beating of Santos from the word go on the right flank and looked a constant threat, although he completely fluffed a chance early in the second half. 7

Tom Cleverley - Showed plenty of endeavour, but made some rash challenges and was sometimes found wanting in terms of his final ball. 5

Michael Carrick - Did not really put a foot wrong, although shot well off target early in the second half. 6

Ashley Young - Frequently in the thick of things, earning the penalty when his attempted cross struck Cazorla's hands. 6

Wayne Rooney - Produced a nice through-ball for Van Persie and brought a good stop out of Mannone before missing from the penalty spot. Set up Evra's goal. 7

Robin Van Persie - Responded to the taunts of the Arsenal fans by scoring against his old club just three minutes in with an expert finish, and was United's danger man throughout. 8

Anderson (for Cleverley 61 minutes) - Blasted one effort over, scored a disallowed goal and picked up a booking. 6

Nani (for Valencia 82 minutes) - Minimal impact after replacing a key man in Valencia. 5

Vito Mannone - Could do little to prevent either goal and pulled off some decent saves thereafter. 7

Bacary Sagna - Afforded a little too much room to United's wide men. Took some hefty challenges. 5

Per Mertesacker - Certainly appeared more dependable than Vermaelen on this occasion, although he did scuff one attempted clearance behind for a corner. 6

Thomas Vermaelen - Made a mistake that gifted Van Persie his goal and was guilty of another lapse after the break in a poor display. 4

Andre Santos - Did nothing to suggest questions about his defensive abilities are misplaced. Struggled to contain Valencia and offered little in attack either. 4

Mikel Arteta - Unable to make a really telling contribution. 5

Jack Wilshere - Looked lively early on, but had already made some crunching tackles by the time he was sent off for clattering Evra in the second half. 5

Aaron Ramsey - Made one notable foray forward but was otherwise quiet and came off for Theo Walcott after the break. 5

Santi Cazorla - Involved in some neat link-up play, but was nowhere near his most influential. Gave away the penalty with a handball before netting a sweetly-struck late consolation. 6

Lukas Podolski - Rarely on the radar and substituted late on. 5

Olivier Giroud - Another who was not involved enough, and he failed to impress when chances did come his way. 5

Theo Walcott (for Ramsey 52 minutes) - Showed desire but had little impact, sending one shot high and wide. 5

Andrey Arshavin (for Podolski 81 minutes) - Booked soon after coming on. Combined with Cazorla for Arsenal's goal. 6
