Fulham manager Martin Jol said today's 2-1 victory at West Brom was the perfect way to start 2013.

With only one victory in the last 12 games and slipping towards the relegation zone, Fulham were in need of a win.

Jol told Sky Sports One: "We are in a false position but the league doesn't lie. Starting the new year with three points is great."

He was full of praise for goal-scorer Dimitar Berbatov.

"He wants us to win and do well and pass it," said Jol. "I am very happy with him."

Berbatov's seventh goal of the season gave the Cottagers a half-time lead. Romelu Lukaku levelled after the break but Alexander Kacaniklic restored the visitors' advantage.

Berbatov said: "It was very important for us. We did it against a very good team. They are playing very well especially at home. We knew it was going to be tough for us."

Berbatov said Fulham "showed character", adding: "I think we deserved three points."
