Man Utd v Real Madrid player ratings
MANCHESTER UNITED
David de Gea: Little to do other than the goals and could not do much about either. 7
Rafael (off 87): Avoided the impetuosity of three weeks ago and got forward for a penalty shout before helping to create United's goal. Lucky to get away with a handball on the line. 8.
Nemanja Vidic: Surprise choice. Hit the post with a powerful header. Brilliant block of Ronaldo's shot. Excellent. 7.
Rio Ferdinand: Rolled back the years with another virtuoso display. Has another season in him. 8.
Patrice Evra: Early yellow card caused a problem but did not let it affect him. 7.
Ryan Giggs: Outstanding effort tracking Ronaldo back and kept going until the end. 7.
Michael Carrick: Vital intervention to prevent Higuain's cross reaching Ronaldo but gave Modric too much room for the equaliser. Shot saved near end. 7.
Tom Cleverley (off 73): Provided midfield energy but sacrificed in the hunt for goals. 7
Nani: Looked as though he could cause problems, without actually doing it until United scored. Harsh red card. 5.
Robin van Persie: Well shackled and hauled even further back after Nani's dismissal. 6.
Wayne Rooney (on 73): Belated introduction and could have given United hope but did not. 6.
Danny Welbeck (off 80): Pace caused Real problems but wasted good change to put the hosts ahead. Faded after half-time. 7.
Ashley Young (on 80): Not enough time to make an impact. 6
Antonio Valencia (on 87): Not enough time to make an impact. 6
REAL MADRID
Diego Lopez: Not entirely convincing but good save from Welbeck and then Carrick late on. No chance for goal. 7
Alvaro Arbeloa (off 58): Poor first touch led to first-half yellow for foul on Evra. Made most of contact with Nani. 6.
Raphael Varane: Youngster was doing well until Nani shrugged him off far too easily. Kept his cool. 7.
Sergio Ramos: Towering first-half display spoiled completely by own goal. Lucky to emerge a winner. 7.
Fabio Coentrao: Steady if unspectacular effort, although that was what Real wanted. 7.
Sami Khedira: Another understated contribution from the German. 7.
Xabi Alonso: Kept Real ticking over in midfield but eventually outshone by Modric. 7.
Angel di Maria (off 44): Nowhere near the force of the Bernabeu. Limped off before the break. 6.
Mesut Ozil (off 70): On his bike looking for space. Did not find that much. 6.
Cristiano Ronaldo: Received standing ovation at start and jeered thereafter. Quiet. But had to score. And did. 7.
Gonzalo Higuain: Early chance which the South American wasted but a pain thereafter. 8.
Kaka (on 44): Not always the best for Real but did well enough here. 8.
Modric (on 58): Been a disappointment for Madrid this season. All changed with a magnificent equaliser. Introduction turned the game. 9.
Pepe (on 70): Sturdy presence screening the defence. Ensured there was no way through. 7.
