JOE HART: Not that much to do before break. Busy afterwards and some outstanding saves. 8.

GLEN JOHNSON: Went close as the visitors tore at their opponents from first whistle. Booked later and struggled. 7.

ASHLEY COLE: Steady display down the left. Happy to adopt a cautious approach, although not given much protection when going got tough. 7.

STEVEN GERRARD: Feeds off the vibrancy so evident in many of his younger team-mates but still gives the ball away too frequently. 6.

JOLEON LESCOTT: Solid defensive performance. On this evidence not easy to understand how he struggles for a game at Manchester City. 7.

CHRIS SMALLING: Another central defender who doesn't fulfil the role much for his club. Effective here for a while although under pressure for a bit. 7.

JAMES MILNER: Gave England energy down the right and did his share of defending when the going got tough. 7.

MICHAEL CARRICK: Kept the visitors ticking over but then lost control of the game as Montenegro surged forward. 6.

DANNY WELBECK: Another excellent effort from the striker whose movement caused massive problems. Harshly booked when he should have been awarded a penalty. 8.

WAYNE ROONEY: Epitomised England's fast start, hitting the post with an excellent chip before netting his 35th international goal. 7.

TOM CLEVERLEY (off 78): Extended ever-present record this season but not one of his best displays. 6.

ASHLEY YOUNG (on 78): Attacking invention helped stop the slide backwards. 7.
