Arsenal take on Fenerbahce in the first leg of their crucial Champions League play-off at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Here, Press Association Sport's Jim van Wijk takes a look at some of the key battles which are set to unfold in Istanbul:

PER MERTESACKER v PIERRE WEBO: With both Thomas Vermaelen and Mikel Arteta sidelined by injury, 6ft 7ins German defender Mertesacker is set to again captain the side and he will need to be on his toes to shackle the threat of experienced Cameroon frontman Webo, who scored in the last qualifying round against Salzburg.

JACK WILSHERE v RAUL MEIRELES: England midfielder Wilshere is the heartbeat of the Arsenal side and is key to the transition from defence to attack. However, in Portugal international Meireles he faces a player well versed in the hustle and bustle of Premier League pace from his spells at Liverpool and Chelsea, where he won the European Cup in 2012 before heading to Turkey.

OLIVIER GIROUD v BRUNO ALVES: France international Giroud got his goalscoring account up and running with a well-taken early strike in the defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday. The powerful forward is set to be in for a real tussle with Bruno Alves, the Portugal defender with plenty of European experience after leaving Porto for Zenit St Petersburg.
