England player ratings: Ukraine 0-0 England

JOE HART – Anxious start when he challenged Roman Zozulya in his penalty area in the first minute, but England's No.1 got away with it. Solid enough thereafter but looks jittery at the moment. 5

KYLE WALKER – On the back foot all night against the excellent Yevgen Konoplianka. Booked. One of the Spurs full-back's least convincing displays in an England shirt. 5

ASHLEY COLE – Reliable in defence, as he so often is, but seldom seen going forward. 6

STEVEN GERRARD (c) – Curled one ambitious shot onto the roof of Ukraine's net but that was a rare highlight in a disjointed performance. 5

GARY CAHILL – England's man of the match tonight. When Ukraine threatened, he defended with great composure. 7

PHIL JAGIELKA – Didn't catch the eye as much as his defensive partner but neither did he falter when Ukraine turned up the heat. 6

THEO WALCOTT (off 87') – Made some potentially incisive runs but his end product was poor, not for the first time. 5

FRANK LAMPARD – Could have won the game with a glancing header in added time, which would have added a considerable coat of gloss to the 90 previous minutes that passed him by. 4

RICKIE LAMBERT – This was a big step-up after Scotland and Moldova at Wembley and it showed. Lots of perspiration, zero inspiration. 4

JACK WILSHERE (off 67') – The Arsenal youngster was, frankly, all over the shop. He tried far too hard to conjure a match-winning performance, but ended up kicking at thin air. 4

JAMES MILNER – Worked hard for his team, as he always does, but rarely got close to the ball. 4

ASHLEY YOUNG (on 67') – Never looked like altering the course of the match. 4

TOM CLEVERLEY (on 87') – The briefest of cameos. N/A
