Player ratings: England 4-1 Montenegro

JOE HART: Under scrutiny following some high-profile errors, but got down well to save a header from Dejan Damjanovic and was unlucky to be beaten by the striker for Montenegro's goal. 6/10

KYLE WALKER: Booked for needlessly pulling back Stevan Jovetic resulting in a suspension which rules him out of the Poland game. 5

LEIGHTON BAINES: Had room to roam forward and offered a strong creative option, but was caught out defensively for the Montenegro goal. 7

STEVEN GERRARD: On his 106th appearance - equalling Sir Bobby Charlton's haul of caps - the captain missed a sitter when presented with a chance by Wayne Rooney. 6

GARY CAHILL: The Chelsea centre-back as kept busy by Damjanovic in a physical tussle, but held firm. 6

PHIL JAGIELKA: The Everton defender has established himself at the heart of the England defence after another assured performance. 7

ANDROS TOWNSEND: A stunning goal capped an impressive debut. The pace of the Tottenham winger troubled the visitors and led to Rooney's opener. 8

FRANK LAMPARD: Performed well in 65 minutes, sitting deep in midfield, before being replaced by Michael Carrick. 6

DANIEL STURRIDGE: The Liverpool man was eager to impress, perhaps over eager, opting for fancy footwork when the conventional approach may have been more effective. Scored late penalty. 7

WAYNE ROONEY: Missed after Townsend's shot was saved but made amends early in the second half with a scrappy goal and grew in confidence thereafter. 8

DANNY WELBECK: Headed wide from Baines cross and might have scored early in the second only for Rooney to net the follow up. 6

MICHAEL CARRICK (on for Lampard, 65 minutes): Slotted in seamlessly in midfield. 6

JACK WILSHERE (on for Townsend, 80): After an eventful week, the Arsenal man was not given enough time to make an impression. 5

JAMES MILNER (on for Gerrard, 87): Too little time to make an impact. 5

VUKASIN POLEKSIC: Saved well from Welbeck, twice, and Gerrard before being beaten by Rooney early in a second half in which he conceded four goals. 7

SAVO PAVICEVIC: Struggled for the most part and was booked for hauling down Welbeck before being replaced. 5

MILAN JOVANOVIC: The left-back had a busy evening opposite Townsend and struggled to cope with the Tottenham man's pace. 5

VLADIMIR VOLKOV: Was anonymous and booked early in the second half before going off. 5

IVAN KECOJEVIC: Part of a resilient visiting rearguard in the first half, but conceded the stoppage-time penalty after fouling Sturridge. 5

STEVAN JOVETIC: The catalyst for much of Montenegro's good work and hit the crossbar with a long-range effort. 7

DEJAN DAMJANOVIC: Was a nuisance throughout and diverted in a shot from substitute Fatos Beqiraj to set up a nervy final 20 minutes. 7

ELSAD ZVEROTIC: Shot off target from long range with Hart retreating to his goal. 5

NIKOLA DRINCIC: Performed well in central midfield with little possession. 5

STEFAN SAVIC: At the heart of a strong defensive showing from Montenegro which fell short. 6

BRANKO BOSKOVIC: Haplessly screwed the ball into his own net from a poor Welbeck cross. 4

FATOS BEQIRAJ (on for Pavicevic, 57): Gave Baines some defensive duties down the right and saw his shot deflected for a goal. 6

SIMON VUKCEVIC (on for Volkov, 72): Made little impact in the closing stages. 5

FILIP KASALICA (on for Jovetic, 81): Not enough time to make an impact. 5
