Champions League player ratings: Manchester United v Real Sociedad

DAVID DE GEA: Untroubled for long spells, but did see his woodwork struck twice. Looked safe enough most of the time when called upon. 6/10

RAFAEL: Energetic in defence and when pushing forward. Booked in the first half for a sliding challenge and substituted for Chris Smalling in the second. 6

JONNY EVANS: Looked pretty solid throughout, although there were one or two hairy moments for United at the back. 6

PHIL JONES: Generally did a good job defensively, but failed to covert two headed attempts at goal. 6

PATRICE EVRA: Spent a lot of time forward early on and also did his duties well enough at the back. 6

SHINJI KAGAWA: Given the chance to impress having been brought into the first XI, he worked hard and probed well from his wide midfield position, although he seemed to lack confidence when a couple of chances came his way just after the hour mark. Booked. 7

RYAN GIGGS: Mixed display from the 39-year-old - generally composed, with some nice moments, but also featuring the odd mistake. 6

MICHAEL CARRICK: Did not really put a foot wrong. 6

ANTONIO VALENCIA: A lively presence on the right side of midfield. Hit the post in the second half. 7

WAYNE ROONEY: Whatever affect the content of Sir Alex Ferguson's book might have had on the striker, it certainly did not appear to be negative. The man in form continued that way, producing a wonderful slaloming run and shot against the post that led to the goal and remaining a thorn in La Real's side throughout. 9

JAVIER HERNANDEZ: Another looking to make an impression on a rare start, Hernandez was less successful than Kagawa. Had the ball in the net with a headed effort that was ruled out for offside, and was fairly quiet otherwise. Eventually brought off for Ashley Young. 5

SUBSTITUTES:

CHRIS SMALLING (for Rafael, 59): Seemingly brought on as a safety precaution given Rafael's booking. 6

ASHLEY YOUNG (for Hernandez 80): Just failed to meet a Rooney cross late on. 6
