Tom Huddlestone was among the disappointed players when Roy Hodgson named his latest England squad on Thursday - but the Hull midfielder had his mother fighting his corner.
Former Tottenham man Huddlestone had emerged as a dark horse for promotion to the international stage, but Hodgson stuck largely with tried and tested players for next Wednesday's home friendly against Denmark.
It means the likes of Huddlestone and Sunderland's Adam Johnson must be considered long shots for World Cup selection in the summer.
On Twitter, Maxine Huddlestone wrote: "England squad ......same old same old , pick your players who don't get a start for their clubs"
Huddlestone has won four caps for England, last appearing against Sweden in November 2012.
He took news of his continuing absence on the chin, after receiving messages from admirers on social media.
"Thanks for the supportive tweets!!" he wrote on Twitter.
"It is a game of opinions I guess, still a lot to play for though from now til end of the season"
