Nov 17th: Keeping my head down

I’m sure by now you will have read or heard about the incident involving myself and Marlon King last week and to be honest there’s nothing more to say about it.

We were called into the manager’s office last week for a chat and as far as I’m concerned it’s water under the bridge. We’ve shaken hands and that’s that.

Back to the football and it was another frustrating day for me on Sunday when I was again left out by the manager. It could have had something to do with what went on during the week, but I honestly don’t know. It’s a question only Phil Brown can answer.

I’m keeping my head up though and on Tuesday I’ll be playing in the reserves against Manchester United. Obviously it’s nothing like turning out for the first team, but it’s a game of football and as ever I will give it my best. Who knows what will happen in the future.

Watching from the stands I thought we did well against Man City for the first 25 minutes, taking the lead and looking the better team. But a mistake by Kamal Zayatte let Stephen Ireland in to equalise and after that it was a very open game.

I think both sides will be happy with a 2-2 draw as it stops the run of defeats both were on.

It also makes it easier for us when we go to Portsmouth next week. Fratton Park is never an easy ground to play at and if we would have gone there on the back of four defeats I think we would have been feeling the pressure a bit.

Even so, the game will be tough. Pompey are a very tall team and up front in Defoe and Crouch have an excellent partnership which will always get them goals.

Before that game, I’ll be watching ITV on Wednesday to see England take on Germany. It’s being called a friendly but I don’t think there should be any such thing in international football.

It’s going to be a hard game to call as England are without so many players and the withdrawals have taken the gloss off the match somewhat.

I’d be interested to see how many of those players would have pulled out if it had been a qualifier. That said it’s the clubs who pay the wages and they want to protect their stars.

Obviously I hope we win, but it’s going to be tough.
