Oct 13th: Boo-boys should lay off Cole

A lot of the talk since Saturday has been about Ashley Cole getting booed by the England fans at Wembley - and if you want my opinion I think it's all a bit embarrassing.

Cole is probably the best left-back in the country and I simply don't understand why England fans would boo their own player. I could understand if it was the Kazakhstan fans getting on his back but what happened was totally counter-productive for the team.

You have to remember as well that the fans booing him are probably Arsenal fans anyway who are just gutted he went to Chelsea, so in a way it might be a back-handed compliment.

Steven Gerrard is right that supporters are entitled to show their opinion: they pay good money to watch a team of world-class individuals. But everyone makes mistakes, Cole didn't do it on purpose, so I think they need to get off his back.

There was that time I got three red cards in one match playing for Aberdeen and I certainly got a bit of stick for that off my own fans.

To be honest I think I did let my team-mates and the fans down that day but it was a totally different situation to the Cole one. We got beat 5-0 and the boss Roy Aitken got the sack afterwards so it didn't reflect too well on me.

But in general, I've been very lucky - it's always the opposition fans that have had a go at me! My attitude has always been: "Slag me off as much as you like, I'll prove to you that you're wrong."

I think it just depends on your character: If the opposition fans are hammering you and then you score, you know what some of them are really thinking is: "I wish he played for us." Cole is obviously a strong character and it shouldn't affect him too badly.

The last few days at Hull have been a bit low-key with some of the squad away on international duty. We've just had another round of what they call "Vo2 Max" testing, which is a pretty technical business to do with how much oxygen your body can process when exercising.

In practice, it basically involves being hooked up to a machine and running on a treadmill for an long as you can!

All the lads' fitness has definitely improved since we've been in the Premier League and we'll be ready to face West Ham at the KC Stadium this Sunday.

It's strange because every team we play at the moment seem to have problems of one sort or another: and the Hammers are obviously going through an uncertain time with their Icelandic owners.

But their squad will still be trying to impress the boss Gianfranco Zola and they're going to be up for it, regardless of what's happening off the pitch.

It's another big game and we'll be going for our third win on the bounce. If we can win our home games, allied to the points we've been picking up on the road, then that will be our ticket to staying in the Premier League.
