Edgar Street

Jan 20: That was a Hereford hammering

Hereford’s Edgar Street was the 91st football ground I have played it – it’s fair to say I didn’t enjoy my afternoon as much as I should have done.

Two goals down after 10 minutes, four down after 41 minutes, it was like Hull’s game at Manchester City all over again – although there was no outdoor teamtalk this time!

Oldham manager John Sheridan told me earlier in the week that in League One anyone can beat anyone and there’s no way I can argue with him after second-from-bottom Hereford put five past us.

Excuses? Well it was blowing a gale down there and they had the wind in the first half, bombarded us and we shipped four. Although the wind was in our favour in the second half, by the time you’re 4-0 down there’s really no way back.

I also hit the post in the game and if that had gone in who knows? I’ve now hit woodwork three times since my move to Oldham, I’m not sure who I’ve annoyed but I’m sure the goals will come.

When it does I’ve been told it will be my 200th league strike. I’m not the sort of person who worries about these sort of things but it will be a nice landmark to reach. As I’ve said before I’ve got nothing to prove with Oldham and I’m sure the goals will arrive soon.

And what better way to get off the mark than in the derby against Stockport next week. I’ve always said derbys are more for fans than players, a game is a game for us. But for the fans to beat their local rivals gives them a real lift and allows them to hold their heads high at work on Monday and hopefully we will do that for our fans.

People have asked me if there’s much of a difference between the Premier League and League One – of course there is. It’s mainly about quality in the final third. I was making some runs on Saturday and expecting the ball and it just didn’t come.

This isn’t having a go at my team-mates, it just how football is, not everyone can be good enough to play in the Premier League. But playing for Oldham is a great way for the younger lads to learn their craft and the more I can do to help the better.
