JOE HART: Helped by poor Bulgaria finishing, Hart was virtually flawless, with his best save sparing Glenn Johnson's blushes. 7.
GLEN JOHNSON: Looked unsteady from minute one and was only spared an embarrassing own goal by the alertness of Hart. Better going forward. 5.
PHIL JAGIELKA: Did not put a foot wrong on what was his first competitive start. Bigger tests await. 7.
MICHAEL DAWSON: Also looked very solid on his full debut until his freak injury. 6.
ASHLEY COLE: Arguably England's best player in the first half. Set up the goal and always looking to get forward. 7.
THEO WALCOTT: It has become a cliche but the Arsenal winger once again wasted good build-up play with a poor final ball. 6.
GARETH BARRY: Other than a few sloppy passes, did what he was asked. 6.
STEVEN GERRARD: Shackled by a central midfield role, he only sporadically got into a position to do any damage. 6.
JAMES MILNER: Linked up reasonably well with Cole down the left but hamstrung by almost always having to cut back inside. 6.
WAYNE ROONEY: Some early reminders of his horror show against Algeria but he was the Rooney of old by full-time, having had a hand in all four goals. 8.
JERMAIN DEFOE: Has replaced Michael Owen as England's arch-finisher. Three chances, three goals. 9.
SUBSTITUTES:
GARY CAHILL (for Dawson, 56 minutes): Came close to scoring and made a crucial block. 6.
ADAM JOHNSON (for Walcott, 74): Once again provided the cutting edge that eluded Walcott, scoring his first goal international goal. 6.
ASHLEY YOUNG (for Defoe, 87): No time to make an impact. 3.
