English trio dealt testing ties in Europa League knockout rounds

Manchester City were drawn against Porto and Manchester United drew Dutch outfit Ajax in the draw for the knockout rounds of the UEFA Europa League.

All three English clubs will face demanding Round of 32 ties against teams that dropped out of the UEFA Champions league as Stoke were drawn against Valencia.

Facing the 2004 UEFA Champions League winners Porto will be no easy task for Manchester City, while Dutch Eredivisie champions Ajax boast a fine European pedigree.

The last 16 draw was also made: should they beat Porto, Manchester City play the winners of Legia Warsaw v Sporting Lisbon, while defeating Ajax would earn Manchester United a match against either Lokomotiv Moscow or Athletic Bilbao.

Tony Pulis's Stoke, meanwhile, would play Trabzonspor or PSV Eindhoven should they get the better of Valencia. Stoke's Round of 32 clash with Valencia and their prolific striker Roberto Soldado is sure to be an intriguing clash of styles.

The pick of the other ties is Lazio v Atletico Madrid - Atletico won the Europa League in 2009-10, beating Fulham in the final, while Lazio were losing finalists in the 1997-98 UEFA Cup final against Inter Milan and won the Cup Winners' Cup the following year.

The two-legged Round of 32 ties are due to be played on 16th and 23rd February next year. A notable exception is Manchester City's home tie against Porto, which will take place on Wednesday 22nd February to avoid clashing with Manchester United's match against Ajax.

The news completed a tough set of draws for British clubs all round on Friday, after Arsenal drew AC Milan and Chelsea were pitted against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League.
