Begovic relieved to avoid cup upset

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has spoken of his relief at coming through Sunday's tough FA Cup tie at Crawley unscathed.

Last year's losing finalists avoided a fifth-round upset against the lowest ranked side left in the competition thanks to goals from Jon Walters and Peter Crouch at Broadfield Stadium.

Rory Delap's early red card looked like it could have potentially changed the game's complexion, although Stoke remained resolute to win 2-0 and secure a place in the quarter-finals for the third year running.

Following wins on trips to Gillingham, Derby and Crawley on their run to the quarter-finals, Tony Pulis' side now face another FA Cup away clash at Liverpool but Begovic is just pleased to be in with another shot at Wembley.

"We really like the cup," he said. "I think the whole club and the whole tradition here is to give our all in the FA Cup.

"I think it looked more comfortable in the end than it probably was.

"We had a battle up here and they gave it their all so we had to really graft to get the result and fortunately in the end we did.

"The first goal was obviously important and it took us on from there.

"If we hadn't have got that it would have made it a little bit tougher as they would have stayed in the game longer and we would have to battle a little more.

"But we got the goal before half-time - a great penalty by 'Walts' - and we went on from there.

"After the break it was a fantastic goal by the lads. We work on that in training all the time and it worked out really well and set us up nicely for the rest of the game.

"They came at us towards the end but we stuck at it, fought away, kept a clean sheet and obviously got the win."

One of the main talking points after the game was Delap's 17th-minute red card for a challenge on David Hunt.

Stoke boss Pulis was furious with the midfielder's dismissal and Begovic added: "It was one of those things where we are not getting decisions. We're not getting many things at the moment. It's typical of the way things are going at the moment."
