Preliminary Round produces more FA Cup fireworks

This season's FA Cup is now in full swing and Damon and Simon from The Real FA Cup blog bring you the pick of the results from last weekend's Preliminary Round

There were nearly as many goals in this round of the FA Cup as in the last round but this week's review is as much about late goals.

Of the five games we featured last Friday, three results were changed by goals deep into injury time.

But, first, the high scorers. Brigg, Bedworth United and Old Woodstock Town were six goal home heroes while Lincoln Moorlands Railway, Cleveden Town and the Metropolitan Police all travelled well and burgled six away goals.

South Park 4-0 Horham (watch highlights above)

South Park leapt out of the blocks and within minutes striker Chris Smith had opened their account.

After Smith added their second later in the first half South Park were looking in control and in the mood for a big performance.

A performance which was summed up by a fine display by captain Daniel Stone- a player who has been at the club since he was 10 - who bagged South Parks third.

With goals flying in at one end Goalkeeper James Wastell was keeping Horsham at bay at the other with a string of fine saves and when Karl Parker netted a fourth for South Park  the post match celebrations could begin. Tunbridge Wells 3-3 Dulwich Hamlet

There were 172 lucky people who got down to this six goal thriller, to which we nearly went. Doh! Three goals in the first 13 minutes saw Hamlet take a 2-1 lead.

Our top player from midweek, Hamlet's Francis Duku, helped Wells to their opener with a slip that besmirched an otherwise Man Of The Match shift, although the pitch didn’t exactly help him out.

Having then equalised and taken the lead fairly swiftly, Hamlet added a third before half-time and looked to be cruising.

Tunbridge got a goal back with 13 minutes to go and as the allotted injury time trickled away it looked like Dulwich had safely negotiated passage to the Qualifying rounds. B

ut with the four minutes nearly up and a few seconds left, Wells fashioned the equaliser. Cracking match report on the Hamlet website. Replay at Champion Hill on Tuesday - and we’re going this time.

AFC Emley 0-1 Northallerton

The five-year-old team from Yorkshire had a bad day at their village office, Though it took a superb 20 yard volley from Martin Butterworth to decide an otherwise even game. On their Facebook forum Emley fans were less than pleased with the meek exit.

Wakefield 2-3 Ashington

The 'original' Emley fared just as badly as the new one, although at least they took the lead and held it for an hour before one man gradually turned the game round.

Wakefield were 2-0 up in 23 minutes but the Colliers’ Steven Young pulled a goal back before half time and then nabbed the equaliser after an hour. With the game heading north for a replay, Young dug out his hat-trick in the 93rd minute. Ashington are now at home to Northallerton.

Felixstowe & Walton 2-1 Team Bury

Another game where a team snatched a result from the jaws of nothing. Team Bury's young bucks gave as good as they got on the pitch but were cruelly denied another crack at the Seasiders when Adam Hampson scored an injury time winner with just seconds remaining. Heartbreaking for Team Bury and neutrals alike.

Lingfield 0-2 Corinthian-Casuals

An accomplished passing performance from Casuals saw them control much of this match. It was an engaging game but lacked the regular penalty box excitement to make it one that will live long in the memory.

The first goal was a shot from distance that sneaked over the goalie, the second was the proverbial ‘towering header’ by Darren Chalke.

Lingfield had one good chance but the brilliantly named Casuals ‘keeper Danny Broken pulled off a brilliant save.

The disappointing facet of this match was the attendance. Sadly, not very well supported at the best of times, Casuals managed to get just 60 fans through the gate – and four of those were us.

Having said that, the walk from the train to the ground is one of soul destroying volume and tedium alongside the A3.

Elsewhere a cracking 2nd goal for Hartney Whitney by Simeon Howell has to be a candidate for goal of the day, which you can see here on the FA website.

553 goals, 163 games, another bumper weekend for the FA Cup. No fewer than 28 replays are to be played on Tuesday including both Dulwich Hamlet v Tunbridge Wells and the Dynamo Derby featured in our preview last week.  There are another four on Wednesday. Full list of Fixtures on the FA website.

The best thing about the FA Cup so far though, we’ve touched the ball at least once in every game we’ve been to. It gives you an extra connection to a game that you would not usually get. But don’t try kicking a ball back to a ‘keeper while wearing walking boots, you look a right eejit when it hits the corner flag.
