Where were England? Knocked out in the group stages
Two things we all know about 1958. Firstly it was the tournament when the world was introduced to the magic of a young Pele, and it was also the only World Cup finals, so far, which included all four Home Nations.
Sadly for England and Scotland, their campaigns lasted no longer than the group stages with England losing out to Brazil and the Soviet Union, while Scotland came bottom of a group containing France, Yugoslavia and Paraguay.
Both Northern Ireland and Wales made the quarter finals but were knocked out by France and Brazil respectively, although the Welsh only lost by a single goal to the future winners.
In the semi-finals Pele further enhanced his reputation with a hat-trick in a 5-2 win over France, while hosts Sweden knocked out reigning champions West Germany.
And, despite being massive underdogs, the Swedes had the audacity to take the lead in the final when Nils Liedholm netted after four minutes. But two goals each from Pele and Vava, plus a strike from future Brazil boss Mario Zagallo, gave the Samba stars their first ever World Cup title.
Did you know? France striker Just Fontaine’s record of 13 goals in a single World Cup finals has never been broken.
