Asian World Cup qualifying

Australia made light work of their first FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign as memebers of the Asian confederation, remaining unbeaten in the final group stage.

The Socceroos won six of their eight games and only conceded a single goal as they booked their place in South Africa with plenty of time to spare.

They will be joined by Japan who took second place in the group, ahead of Bahrain who went into a play off.

Group Two ended up as an all Korean affair as first regional powerhouse South Korea, and then their neighbours to the north secured qualification.

North Korea's success was the big shock of qualification as the team from the Communist country edged out Saudi Arabia and Iran to make the finals for the first time since 1966.

Bahrain beat Saudi Arabia in a two-legged play-off but were then knocked out by New Zealand in a match which would decide who would reach the finals.
