Tardelli 1982 celebrate

On This Day: 11 July

The most memorable day for a generation of Italian football fans as Paolo Rossi, Marco Tardelli and Alessandro Altobelli gave them victory over West Germany in Madrid in 1982.

In 1998 at Paris's Parc de Princes, Croatia beat Netherlands 2-1 in the third-place play-off in a game most notable for Davor Suker scoring the winner and in doing so secure himself sole possession of the Golden Boot with six goals.

1966 was the latest starting World Cup of all time and the opener on this day was certainly not a game worth waiting for as England and Uruguay played out a dull goalless draw.
