A 47-year-old man appeared before magistrates on Tuesday charged with racially abusing Jason Euell during a Carling Cup tie.

Robert Mason, who is alleged to have made racist comments towards Blackpool striker Euell, was not asked to enter a plea during a brief hearing at Stoke-on-Trent Magistrates' Court.

The defendant is charged with engaging in racially-aggravated threatening behaviour with intent to cause Euell harassment, alarm or distress.

Magistrates bailed Mason to reappear at the same court on November 24 following submissions by his solicitor.

Mason, of Bradwell Lane, Newcastle-under-Lyme, was arrested by Staffordshire Police during Stoke's 4-3 victory against Blackpool on September 22.
