A header from Wayne Rooney earned Manchester United Carling Cup glory against Aston Villa at Wembley.

The England striker, who started the game on the substitute's bench, headed home from Antonio Valencia's cross in the second half as Manchester United retained their trophy.

Aston Villa were in front early on when James Milner fired home from the penalty spot after Nemanja Vidic had pulled down Gabby Agbonlahor.

United soon levelled through Michael Owen but the striker's day was cut short when he was replaced by Rooney after picking up what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

The second half failed to live up to the first before Rooney popped up to hand United the trophy.
