Did Man United deserve victory?
Over the 120 minutes there wasn't very much between the sides. United went closest when Cristiano Ronaldo hit the post late on and should have had a penalty when the same player was tripped by Ledley King. But Spurs also had their chances with United keeper Ben Foster called into action on a number of occasions.
Much like Saturday's Six Nations game at Croke Park, the match never lived up to expectations and, also like the rugby, it was quite scrappy in places. That said, even during periods when they were far from their best United were never dominated and just for the fact that they kept their nerve in the final shootout they deserved yet another trophy.
Sir Alex Ferguson took a big risk including so many of his youngsters and leaving players such as Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov out of the squad completely. But it paid off and he will now have those two players and others fresh for Newcastle in the Premier League this week, Fulham in the FA Cup on Saturday and the big Champions League clash with Inter Milan in 10 days time.
How did Tottenham perform?
Harry Redknapp chose to attack United by selecting both Darren Bent and Roman Pavlyuchenko up front with Luka Modric tucked in behind. But it was the hard work and graft of the lesser lights such as Jermaine Jenas and Benoit Assou-Ekotto which really helped Spurs stay in the game. Aaron Lennon also had a good game on the flank but yet again his delivery let him down. In fact the only player to really underperform was Pavlyunchenko who had done so much to get the club to Wembley in the first place.
Tottenham may have been helped by United's selection, the absence of Michael Carrick in central midfield certainly stifled the Reds' creativity, but Redknapp will have been proud of the way his side kept pace with the best team in the land. Obvious to say, but he now needs those same players to perform in that way when their battle against relegation resumes against Middlesbrough on Wednesday.
Does Cristiano Ronaldo deserve our sympathy?
Let's be clear about this, of course it was a penalty. The winger was clearly tripped by Ledley King as he crossed the Spurs penalty but instead of getting a penalty he was shown a yellow card. The injustice of it all.
Only it wasn't all referee Chris Foy's fault, for a start the only time it was clear Ronaldo had been fouled was when we saw a super, super slo-mo on the TV. Also, and let's be honest here we're all grown ups, it wouldn't have been the first time the winger had taken to the floor - in fact he was booked for a deliberate dive in the Premier League last month. Overall it was another frustrating day for Ronaldo as he rarely sparkled and when he did he found the inside of the Tottenham post preventing a last-minute winner.
Do Spurs really want to sell Luka Modric?
Assuming his English is good enough, the Croatian schemer would have woken up at Tottenham's team hotel on Sunday morning to find out that he was heading a list of players the club wanted to get rid of during the summer. Odd for a player boss Harry Redknapp has described as "marvellous" and as someone who can "run the show".
At Wembley he was again influential as he took up a position just behind Tottenham's front two and passed, probed and provided United with problems. He was slightly less effective once the off-song Pavlyuchenko was replaced and he was asked to push on, but if Spurs are to build on another Wembley appearance, then Modric is surely a player they will need to keep.
Your thoughts:
Spurs can hold their own against the top teams who come out to play football. It suits their style. This season, they have drawn with Man United in the league, drawn twice with Arsenal, drawn with Chelsea and beaten Liverpool twice. What they can't do is grind out results against teams who roll up their sleeves and get stuck in - Bolton being a prime example. Until they learn to compete with the less attractive teams, they will never be able to reach the level of consistency required to achieve Champions League qualification. Ronny, via e-mail
