Reds facing defining moment

Lyon v Liverpool key battles

MIRALEM PJANIC V JAVIER MASCHERANO

The Bosnian teenager had a quiet game at Anfield, his stunning talent kept quiet by Mascherano for much of the game. But on his own patch the midfielder will be a different prospect, and is the one player Liverpool need to keep a tight reign on above all others. Mascherano had a fine game in the first meeting between these sides last month, even if he could not stop the French club winning 2-1. But without Steven Gerrard, there is a need for leadership in midfield, and that means the Argentina captain playing to his full potential.

SIDNEY GOVOU V EMILIANO INSUA

The young Argentinian defender struggled against the France international in the first leg, and will have to do better this time around. Govou showed pace and technique on the right, and exposed the full-back's inexperience. But Insua learns fast. He has already forced himself into Diego Maradona's team alongside Mascherano, and he will have worked hard to find a way to contain the 30-year-old.

JEREMY TOULALAN V FERNANDO TORRES

Toulalan showed his versatility at Anfield, playing in defence against Torres, and holding his own. Lyon will need another such performance this time around even if Torres is struggling with an injury. He struggled for fitness against Manchester United and Fulham, but scored in both matches. If Liverpool manage to patch him up long enough to have an impact, it could be the telling point of the match.
