Lyon moved to within touching distance of the Champions League's knockout stages thanks to goals by Juninho and Anthony Reveillere against Steaua Bucharest on Wednesday.
Dead-ball doyen Juninho crashed home a trademark free-kick a minute before the interval and right-back Reveillere thundered in the killer second in the 89th minute to earn Les Gones a deserved Group F victory at the Stade Gerland.
The win lifts the French champions up to eight points and they are now neck and neck with Bayern Munich at the top of the table, both sides five points clear of Fiorentina with just two matchdays remaining.
Steaua, who offered precious little going forward against Lyon, are now out of contention for a top-two spot but could still finish third in the group and therefore qualify for the UEFA Cup.
It was always unlikely there was going to be a repeat of the goal-fest the sides served up two weeks ago, when Lyon claimed a 5-3 win in the Romanian capital.
Steaua look to have perked up, at least defensively, under new boss Dorinel Munteanu.
The former Romania international was brought in as a replacement for the beleaguered Marius Lacatus, who quit following the thrashing administered by Lyon in the reverse fixture.
And his team will count themselves slightly unlucky to have been behind at the break.
Lyon bossed possession in the first half without really creating many clear-cut chances.
Indeed the first opportunity fell to Steaua striker Pantelis Kapetanos, who looped a long-range header straight at Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Les Gones' best opening of the half was created by Karim Benzema after he ran on to a long pass from Ederson. The France striker cut inside, eliminating two would-be tacklers, and saw his curling shot palmed away by Robinson Zapata.
Reveillere then found himself clear minutes later but was denied by a wonderful covering tackle by Dorin Goian.
By the half-hour mark, Steaua were looking comfortable, without really worrying Lloris, but a well-worked free-kick by Les Gones put them behind a minute before half-time.
Juninho fired the set-piece straight at the part of the wall cleverly vacated by Fabio Grosso and Cris, and the low shot skidded off the turf and was parried into his own net by the surprised Zapata.
Jean Makoun had a header cleared off the line by Banel Nicolita in the 53rd minute as Lyon searched for a second.
At the other end, Tiago Gomes had a clear sight of goal from the edge of the area when teed up by Kapetanos but the attacking midfielder's effort was dealt with by Lloris.
Steaua had more of the ball in the final 20 minutes but as they pushed forward, gaps were always likely at the back and Lyon substitute Kim Kallstrom almost benefited when he volleyed just wide in the 73rd minute.
The hosts' second did eventually come in the final minute, Cesar Delgado laying in Reveillere, who cut inside and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot which flew high into the net from 20 yards.
