Report: Maccabi Haifa v Glentoran

Published: Thursday, 16 July 2009, 8:52AM

Glentoran suffered a 6-0 defeat to Maccabi Haifa in the first leg of their Champions League second qualifying round tie in the Kiryat Eli'ezer Stadium.

The Northern Irish champions held out for 36 minutes before Lior Rafaelov opened the scoring for the hosts, who reached the Champions League group stage in 2002/3.

Glentoran's gutsy first-half work would count for nothing in a one-sided second period in which Yaniv Katan doubled the deficit and Vladimer Dvalishvili added the hosts' third.

In a late flourish Haifa increased their advantage with a second for Dvalishvili and late strikes from Shlomi Arbeitman and Mohamada Shahbary.

Following rivals Linfield's UEFA Cup exit, Glentoran will be left playing for pride when they host the Israelis in the second leg in Belfast next Wednesday.
