Real Madrid 0-2 Juventus

Juventus secured their passage to the knockout stage of the Champions League after seeing off Group H rivals Real Madrid 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

After setting Juve on their way with the opening goal in their 2-1 win over Madrid last time out in the competition, Alessandro Del Piero was again the hero with a goal in each half.

The hosts had chances to get back into the game, but were left to rue a number of mistakes as they fell four points adrift of their Italian rivals in the group.

Madrid were wasteful from the opening moments, with Roysten Drenthe particularly culpable as he overhit a pair of crosses in the first 10 minutes after easily getting the better of Juve defender Giorgio Chiellini.

Their inability to produce anything positive from their early dominance meant Madrid allowed their opponents to settle into the game, so much so that after 17 minutes the hosts found themselves a goal down.

Guti misplaced a pass in midfield which was leapt upon by Del Piero, and the Juve captain was able to run virtually unopposed into the Madrid area and place a cool finish beyond the reach of Iker Casillas and into the far corner of the net.

But Madrid failed to let their heads drop and could have been level within seven minutes.

Sergio Ramos found himself all alone in front of goal as a cross from the right sailed towards him, but the Spaniard could only drill his header high of the target.

Ruud van Nistelrooy continued the hosts' wasteful ways after 36 minutes when he shot over after receiving a great pass on the break from Guti, before Drenthe tried his luck with a shot from close range which Alex Manninger was able to stop.

Madrid kept up the pressure on their guests at the start of the second half but without creating as much in the way of clear-cut chances as they had in the first half.

They soon resorted to looking for penalties to get them back in the game, as Van Nistelrooy and Raul both went down under challenges in the box but both times their protests were waved away.

The referee was in no doubt, however, when Fabio Cannavaro brought down Momo Sissoko 25 yards from goal, and Del Piero stepped up to silence the Bernabeu crowd with a curling shot straight into the top left-hand side of the goal.

Real nearly pulled one back immediately after when Gonzalo Higuain missed from close range following another Drenthe cross.

But in the end it appeared that if there were any more goals in the game they would come from Juve, and Del Piero nearly earned himself the match ball when he struck the post four minutes from time.
