Arsenal v Dynamo Kiev

Published: Monday, 24 November 2008, 8:18PM

Axed captain William Gallas will return to the Arsenal squad for Tuesday night's Champions League clash against Dynamo Kiev at Emirates Stadium, but Abou Diaby (abdominal strain) and Samir Nasri (knee) miss out.

New skipper Cesc Fabregas is available again following a one-match domestic suspension served against Manchester City on Saturday.

Kolo Toure (calf), Theo Walcott (shoulder), Emmanuel Eboue (knee), Emmanuel Adebayor and Bacary Sagna (both ankle) are also unavailable, along with long-term absentees Tomas Rosicky (knee) and Eduardo, who is closing in on a return from his broken leg.

Arsene Wenger maintains Arsenal's future is bright under Fabregas - and backed former skipper Gallas to return stronger from his controversial spell in leading the team.

The Gunners boss moved to strip former Chelsea defender Gallas of the captaincy and left him out of the squad at the weekend following his latest public criticism of the young Gunners.

Gallas, 31, was something of a unexpected choice to be installed as permanent skipper after Thierry Henry left for Barcelona. Last season, he famously lost composure at Birmingham when breaking down in the centre circle and recently accepted he had put in some "tired" performances as he was found wanting in defensive duties.

Nevertheless, the veteran Frenchman had always been given the full backing of his manager - until the events of last week and Gallas' hard-hitting revelations of supposed dressing-room unrest.

Wenger, though, hopes the matter can now be put behind player, squad and club alike as Arsenal aim to secure a place in the knockout stages.

"I do not think I have to especially explain why I make the decisions, but it is permanent," said Wenger.

"It is a good opportunity now for us to show we have strength and ability.

"Even if we are frustrated at the moment, it is not all doom and gloom.

"We have a strong belief in our ability and we have a good opportunity to show we care about the club and that we can qualify.

"The ideal way is to play well, to show we are united and that we have the strength to deal with it."

Dynamo Kiev head coach Yuriy Semin maintains any "problems" Arsenal may have are of no concern to his team as they look to dent the Gunners' ambitions.

Victory for Kiev at Emirates Stadium would move them level with Arsenal in Group G and into a strong position to reach the knockout stages.

However, Semin rejected any talk of facing a club in crisis and insists his men must focus on producing a performance themselves to build on an impressive 1-0 win in Porto last time out.

"The problems at Arsenal are their problems, it is not important to us," he said.

"What will only be good for us is to play the best game we can, and the players realise that themselves."

Former Russian coach Semin continued: "I think it will be a very difficult game.

"Our group is very difficult because everybody is gaining points and every point will be important when deciding who qualifies.

"We came here to fight, to gain access to the next round and we are prepared for that.

"We have seen the games against Man City and Aston Villa," said Semin, whose side were denied an opening-match victory over Arsenal during September in Kiev following a late goal by, ironically, Gallas.

"Without a doubt we have a plan that we got after watching those games, but only the match itself will show what plan we have made from this information."

Kiev were not in action at the weekend, but remain three points clear at the top of the Ukrainian league with a game in hand on second-placed Metalist.
