Fenerbahce v FC Porto

Published: Monday, 24 November 2008, 7:20PM

Porto are hoping they can book their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League with victory over Fenerbahce.

The Portuguese club can make sure of progressing to the next stage if they win and Dynamo Kiev fail to beat Arsenal in London in Group G's other game.

However, a trip to Istanbul is never easy, a fact acknowledged by Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira.

"This challenge is very important, not only in terms of the game itself, but also for Porto in the Champions League," he said. "We are looking to secure qualification.

"Fenerbahce have talent and experience, but that for us translates as an added motivation. We know that we will find a home crowd that is passionate for the home team, but this does not worry us as this is exactly the sort of environment that we like.

"We are certain that we can win. This is our only intention."

However, making it harder for Porto will be the expected return of Fener winger Deivid, who has been missing with a broken shin bone.

Fener are unbeaten while Deivid has been on the field in league play this season, and his return should give coach Luis Aragones a significant boost.

Deivid himself is in determined mood.

"We know this match will be very tough and stressful," he said on uefa.com. "I appreciate that we need to win at all costs and I believe we have the strength to do that. To be honest, even a draw would be a poor result for us."

Fenerbahce need something of a miracle to get out of the group at this stage, having taken only two points from their four games so far.

Anything short of a victory in this match will end their chances and either way they are relying on results elsewhere.

Aragones said his team will show Porto respect, but added they were out to win at all costs.

"Porto is really a very strong team," he said. "When we are up against a rival the first thing we should do is show them respect.

"When we face a team we have the utmost respect for them. But come tomorrow the only thing we think about is winning."

Fenerbahce are without Lugano and Selcuk Sahin due to suspension, while Semih is out injured. Roberto Carlos is expected to shake off a knock in time to take up his place in the team.

Pedro Emanuel has made the trip to Turkey after overcoming a knee injury, while Ferreira also has Hulk and Guarin back at his disposal.

However, he must make up for the absence of influential midfielder Lucho Gonzalez, who is suspended for this match.
