England

BEN FOSTER: Had several shaky moments, particularly with his kicking early on, and was lucky to stay on after bringing down Nilmar for the second-half penalty. Hardly a confidence-inspiring performance. 6

WES BROWN: Was exposed by Nilmar on a number of occasions - especially in the opening 25 minutes - lost his opponent for the goal and was at fault for giving away the penalty. 4

MATTHEW UPSON: Inconsistent performance in which he gave the ball away and produced well-timed tackles in equal measure but switched off for Nilmar's goal. 6

JOLEON LESCOTT: Seemed the more comfortable of the two centre-backs, proving again he is an able deputy for Fabio Capello's first-choice pair. 7

WAYNE BRIDGE: Largely anonymous for long periods but with Brazil enjoying so much success down their left was spared being overloaded by Maicon's overlapping runs. 6

SHAUN WRIGHT-PHILLIPS: Got in a penetrative cross early on but faded and failed to test makeshift left-back Michel Bastos. 5

GARETH BARRY: Simple, solid performance but as the senior man in central midfield more was expected of him in terms of pushing the team forward. 6

JERMAINE JENAS: Desperate to impress but was often too over-ambitious and failed to convince. 5

JAMES MILNER: Looked one of England's brightest players in the first half with some useful crosses and went close with a second-half volley. 7

WAYNE ROONEY: Put in the usual whole-hearted performance but probably tried too hard as captain. Left Bent too isolated as he tried to create from deep. 6

DARREN BENT: Starved of service during his 55 minutes on the pitch and was given little chance to impress. 5

Substitutes

JERMAIN DEFOE (on for Bent, 55): Hardly touched the ball in a dangerous position as the lack of service to the front man continued. 5

TOM HUDDLESTONE (on for Barry, 81): Had a late half-chance but could not have been expected to do something Barry had not. 5

PETER CROUCH (on for Wright-Phillips, 81): Sent on to provide Defoe with some much-needed support but had little chance to get in the game. 5

ASHLEY YOUNG (on for Milner, 87): Too little time to make any kind of impression. 5

Brazil

JULIO CESAR: Another quiet evening for the Brazil goalkeeper as he was not tested. 6

MAICON: Reined in his usual rampaging runs down field until late in the game when England became stretched as Milner caused him a few problems. 6

LUCIO: Confident performance from the experienced centre-back, highlighted by his run and shot which rebounded off a post. 7

THIAGO SILVA: With England's strikers not seeing much of the ball had a relatively easy time, although should have been penalised for fouling Rooney in the first half. 6

MICHEL BASTOS: Makeshift left-back looked like he could be the weak link early on but England failed to capitalise. 6

GILBERTO SILVA: Held things together in the centre with a quiet but effective performance. 7

FELIPE MELO: In tandem with Gilberto was able to control central midfield. 6

ELANO: After a quiet first half became more involved after the break and provided the cross for Nilmark's goal. 6

KAKA: Showed a couple of flashes of his talent but was by no means at the top of his world-class game. 6

NILMAR: Caused Wes Brown numerous problems down England's right, timed his run perfectly to score with a well-placed header and won the penalty. 8

LUIS FABIANO: Led the line well, held up the ball and linked play in a way which England did not. 7

Substitutes:

DANI ALVES (on for Elano, 64): Injected some extra pace and drive into the attack and almost created a second goal for Nilmar. 6

HULK (on for Luis Fabiano, 67): Never really got up to the level of performance required but is always likely to be a squad player at best. 5

JULIO BAPTISTA (on for Kaka, 81): Strong runner but did not threaten. 5

CARLOS EDUARDO (on for Nilmar, 81): Failed to make the most of the little possession he received. 5.
