Terry urges restraint

Moscow miss still haunts Terry

John Terry will never fully recover from his Champions League final penalty despair until he helps Chelsea win club football's most coveted trophy.

Terry would have won the competition for the Blues had he scored against Manchester United in the 2008 shoot-out in Moscow.

But he failed to convert his chance, and the Red Devils went on to win the Champions League for the second time.

Terry revealed his inner thoughts when asked how his England team-mate Rio Ferdinand would cope with a disappointing display for his country against Ukraine.

Ferdinand was caught out of position for the only goal of the game on Saturday as Fabio Capello's side surrendered their 100% record in their World Cup qualifying group.

Terry said: "As any player, when you make a mistake you want to put it right. You feel as if you've let your team-mates down.

"But some players go into their shells. Rio still wants the ball. That's why he's one of the best in the world - and someone I still learn from - in training and at Manchester United.

"He wants to put things right, but all of us in the squad are 100% behind him, and anyone else who makes a mistake."

Terry still recalls his own lowest point on a football pitch.

"I still feel as if I let my Chelsea team-mates down (in Moscow). That's right within me," he admitted.

"I still feel like I owe my team-mates one, and that will stay with me until we win a Champions League. That's the way I feel.

"I don't know how Rio feels about it, but probably very similar. It doesn't affect me mentally when I'm playing. You make mistakes.

"But Rio can cope with that. He's a big player, a big personality, and he can put things right in the next game or the next training session. That's why he's at Manchester United."
