Wroe treble gives Gulls win

Torquay United midfielder Nicky Wroe hit a hat-trick to earn his side a 3-1 victory over Cheltenham.

Cheltenham took the lead in the eighth minute when Theo Lewis headed Justin Richards' near-post cross into the far corner.

However, the visitors hit the self-destruct button over the course of the next 10 minutes, giving away two penalties and going down to 10 men.

Josh Low was fortunate to earn just a yellow card for bringing down Elliot Benyon for the first penalty in the 10th minute, while Lee Ridley was shown a red card for deliberately handling the ball on the line to prevent Benyon scoring from close range eight minutes later. Gulls midfielder Wroe dispatched both spot kicks into the bottom right corner.

Cheltenham did regroup well and finished the half as the stronger side. Striker Elvis Hammond went close with an audacious overhead kick while Low should have done better after skilfully cutting inside from the left wing.

Torquay nearly extended their lead straight after the break. Wayne Carlisle's low shot from outside the box skipped up off the greasy Plainmoor surface and hit the right post. However, a much-deserved third goal duly arrived in the 70th minute.

Winger Jake Thomson led a blistering counter attack and, when the ball broke loose on the edge of the box, Wroe was on hand to blast a left-footed shot into the top right-hand corner to complete his hat-trick. Substitute Scott Rendell then nearly added a fourth with a sensational strike as the ball sat up nicely 40 yards from goal, the ball cannoning off the right post and away to safety.
