FIFA World Cup: European play-off previews

As the play-offs begin for the final four European places at next summer's World Cup, we bring you all the information yuo need to know before the first-leg matches:

Ireland v France

Ireland have hosted France on seven occasions, winning three times and losing twice.
The last three meetings between the two teams have produced only one goal in total.
France have managed only two win in their last six trips to play in Dublin, however one of these cam in their last match there – 1-0 in a September 2005 World Cup Qualifier.
“Les Bleus” have not failed to qualify for a major tournament since 1994, reaching the finals stages of seven tournaments since then.
Ireland on the other hand have qualified for only one of seven major tournaments since 1994 (2002 World Cup).
Six of Ireland’s last nine matches have ended in draws.
Giovanni Trapattoni’s men have lost only one of their last 20 World Cup Qualifying matches – 1-0 at home to France in September 2005.
The Irish have won only one of their last six matches on home soil, drawing four times and winning once.

Greece v Ukraine

The four previous matches between Greece and Ukraine have produced a total of only six goals.
None of the previous clashes saw a goal in the first half.
The last time Greece hosted Ukraine, in June 2005, the Ukrainians ran out 1-0 winners.
The Greeks have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 10 matches.
Otto Rehhagel’s men have won their last three competitive matches on home soil.
Ukraine have kept four consecutive clean sheets in international fixtures.
Andriy Shevchenko has scored in four of Ukraine’s last five competitive away ties.
Theofanis Gekas was the top scorer during the group stages of 2010 World Cup Qualifying, finding the net on 10 occasions, bagging six in the last three.
No side was awarded more penalties during the group stages of qualification than Ukraine (five).

Portugal v Bosnia-Herzegovina

This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Portugal are unbeaten in 10 consecutive matches, winning seven.
The Portuguese have conceded only one goal in their last six matches, and only two in their last 10.
Simão has scored three goals in Portugal’s last two matches.
Cristiano Ronaldo, injured for this match, did not score once in seven matches for Portugal during the group stages of qualifying.
Bosnia-Herzegovina have won four of their last five away matches, drawing the other.
The Bosnians have kept a clean sheet in their last four matches on the road.
Only Theofanis Gekas (10) scored more goals than Edin Dzeko (9) during the group stages of 2010 World Cup Qualifying.
Spain’s Xavi was the only player to create more shooting opportunities for his team-mates (36) during the group stages of qualification than Deco (33).

Russia v Slovenia

The only previous competitive meeting between the two sides in Russia ended in a 1-1 draw (March 2001).
Russia have lost two of their last three matches on home soil.
Both sides have scored in each of the three previous meetings between Russia and Slovenia.
Guus Hiddink’s men have only failed to score only once in their last 12 matches.
Slovenia have won their last three matches, keeping a clean sheet each time.
The Slovenians have found the net 14 times in their last five matches.
Roman Pavlyuchenko has scored three penalties in Russia’s last five competitive matches on home soil.
Only Belgium (67) managed more successful crosses in the group stages of World Cup qualifying than Slovenia (66).
