World Cup diary: South Africa's drivers told to take it easy

It appears that one of the big worries South African organisers have during the tournament is the behaviour of the country's drivers.

According to a report on www.iol.co.za South Africa's traffic authorities have called on drivers to "exercise tolerance and patience" during the competition to "reduce the risk of road rage and carnage".

Apparently 13,000 people died on South Africa's roads last year and the thought of thousands of fans roaming the streets has caused something of a panic.

Ashref Ismail, national traffic enforcement co-ordinator and head of 2010 operations at the Road Traffic Management Corporation said: ""It is a big challenge, especially with the phenomenon of hooliganism and intoxicated fans roaming the streets after matches.

"But we are working with the host cities and have requested that each host city give us their event transport and safety plans." Phew, that's alright then.

On the pitch South Africa's preparations received a huge jolt when Brazilian Joel Santana resigned as coach of the Bafana Bafana after a run of eight losses in nine games.

In a case of back to the future, former coach Carlos Alberto Parreira has been reappointed 18 months after quitting the position for personal reasons.

The big fear in South Africa is that their side will become the first host nation to fail to get out of the group stages but the appointment of a coach who won just nine of his 21 games in charge is hardly going to ease worried minds.

The swine flu outbreak in Blackburn was big news down under as New Zealand's football fans waited with baited breath for the latest health updates on their skipper Ryan Nelsen.

Thankfully for the All Whites, Nelsen has been given the all-clear and will line up against Bahrain in the second leg of their play-off clash in Wellington on November 14. The first match ended goalless.
