Dorman surprised to get Wales call

St Mirren midfielder Andy Dorman admits he was shocked to be called into the Wales squad for Saturday's friendly with Scotland.

Chester-born Dorman's international future has been the subject of speculation after he became eligible for Wales last month under the new five-year school rule. The rule means that any British passport holder can play for any home nations side, providing they have been educated for a minimum of five years in that country.

The 27-year-old, who has been one of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League's top performers since joining Saints from New England Revolution in January 2008, was called up on Monday and told St Mirren's official website: "I'm really happy to get the call-up for Wales but it came as a bit of a shock."

He added: "I was at training and the manager came in and told me after training so it is brilliant. I join up with the Welsh squad on Tuesday night and I'm really looking forward to it.

"A lot of the media attention last week was down to the change in the rule of qualification so for me it was just a case of getting on with things by playing for St Mirren and looking forward to the game against Rangers."

Dorman could face St Mirren team-mate Paul Gallacher after the goalkeeper was called into the Scotland squad following an injury to Craig Gordon.

"I've been in Scotland for a couple of years now and I'm enjoying it here so with the game being against Scotland on Saturday it gives me an added incentive to try and get into the squad," Dorman said.

"It was also really good that Paul has been called up for Scotland as it shows that the club is going in the right direction."
