Aberdeen boss Mark McGhee has apologised to Dundee United legend Paul Hegarty after claiming the former defender threatened to break his legs.
McGhee made the comment after his side's Clydesdale Bank Premier League win at Tannadice on Sunday and Hegarty was incensed at the remark, telling BBC Scotland: "I am absolutely raging. His comments are disgraceful. I don't know where he gets that from. I never said anything like that in my life."
McGhee responded by saying: "I apologise if I caused offence to Paul. He was one of the United players I played against regularly and was the first name that came into my head. I accept he never said anything like that to me when we were playing."
He added: "It was a tongue-in-cheek remark, a throwaway line. I never meant to cause him any offence and I apologise to him if I have offended him."
Hegarty won eight caps for Scotland in a 20-year playing career and was working as an assistant to former national team boss George Burley before the latter's sacking in November.
