FC Copenhagen v CFR Cluj-Napoca

Cluj's hopes in the balance

Romanian club CFR Cluj must avoid defeat in their first European outing under new manager Andrea Mandorlini to maintain their interest in this season's Europa League.

Cluj, bottom of Group K, defeated FC Copenhagen in the opening match but three straight defeats cost Antonio Conceicao his job.

Now even a draw at the Parken Stadium could be a disastrous result for their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the rebranded competition.

A loss would confirm elimination but club president Iuliu Muresan is looking on the positive side.

"We can go confidently in Copenhagen in search of a win even if our chances are not great," Muresan said.

"We are more relaxed and perhaps for this reason we can be victorious, or take a point in Denmark."

Three points for either side would provide a chance of progress to the final 32 but a stalemate would mean elimination for both if Sparta Prague win at PSV Eindhoven.

Copenhagen have been strong at their Parken Stadium in European encounters and are currently unbeaten there in seven matches.

The portents for an away win are not good then but Cluj did begin their 2008-09 Champions League campaign with a shock 2-1 success at Roma.

They also showed their potential by holding Chelsea to a goalless draw before exiting their debut season in the continent's top competition.

Former Ipswich midfielder Sixto Peralta was instrumental in the 2-0 Cluj win over the Danish visitors in September, teeing up fellow Argentinian midfielder Juan Culio for the opening goal.

The biggest threat for the Danes in that contest was one-time Rangers midfielder Libor Sionko, the Czech Republic midfielder.

Copenhagen, managed by former Wimbledon midfielder Stale Solbakken, also include ex-Chelsea player Jesper Gronkjaer in their squad.

Gronkjaer netted from the penalty spot in Copenhagen's last home Europa League match - the 1-1 draw with PSV which left them with four points from as many outings.
