History

Aston Villa were formed in 1874 and were the most southerly of the founder members of the Football League in 1888, having won the FA Cup in 1887. They were one of two English teams to do the league and cup double in the 19th century, winning both in 1897. Further trophies arrived in the early part of the 20th century but in 1936 Villa were relegated for the first time, conceding a massive 110 goals in the process. The middle decades of the century saw them flit between divisions, picking up a sixth FA Cup in 1957. They also won the first League Cup in 1961.But by 1970 they had dropped into the third tier for the first time and it took Villa seven years to return to the top-flight. Under manager Ron Saunders they won the league title in 1981 and then famously added a European Cup a year later. In the Premier League era Villa have finished as high as second but have flirted with relegation. Under current manager Martin O'Neill there has been strong progress and the club are looking to break into the top four.
