Formed in 1885 by a group of cricketers keen for some winter exercise, the club now known as Birmingham City was initially called Small Heath Alliance, dropping the ?Alliance? from their name three years later and renaming themselves Birmingham FC in 1905 - before adding the ?City? in 1943. Small Heath were founder members of the Second Division (in 1893) and its first ever champions. They?ve won the second another four times but not since 1955 and have never won the Football League title. Indeed Blues have also failed to lift the FA Cup (they were beaten finalists in 1931 and 1956) with their achievements in knockout football limited to the League Cup in the early 1960s, and the Leyland Daf Cup and Auto Windscreens Shield three decades later. They came close to lifting the League Cup again in 2001 when a last-minute equaliser in the final with Liverpool forced extra-time. But the match went to penalties and Liverpool emerged on top. Despite existing in the shadow of their fierce rivals, and more successful neighbours Aston Villa, Birmingham have always attracted a large fanbase to their inner-city St Andrew?s ground (which they moved to in 1906), and have been home to a number of big names such as Sir Alf Ramsey ? who managed the club in the 1970s ? Trevor Francis ? who became the first œ1million player when sold to Nottingham Forest in 1979 and Christophe Dugarry ? a World Cup winner with France in 1998 and a key part of Birmingham?s successful fight against relegation in 2004.
